NPR: wart remedies

I have a large (and disgusting) wart on my finger. It's gotten so large I know it is messing with my nerves because it gets numb on my finger around it. Its very resistant to every treatment I've tried. Freezing off at the dermatologist, all the OTC medicines, duct tape, vinegar. With the freezing (I've done twice) it goes away for a little while but still comes back, the OTC and duct tape does nothing, the vinegar gets rid of but it comes back immediately. Anyone have any suggestions? I've had this ugly thing for years and it just want it gone.

They didn't mention any other possibility and it's not my first wart and it looks like a wart to me. But I'm no dr.

  • how long did you leave the duct tape on? I've heard you should leave it on until it falls off then put more on for a month. we used it on one for my daughter but changed it every night.

I left it on for 3 weeks with no change in the wart at all.

  • If it's a wart, I think you're going to have better luck getting rid of it post-pregnancy.  A lot of the things we do for warts rely on our immune system to recognize and kill the remainder of the wart.  As you naturally are somewhat immunosuppressed in pregnancy, treatment might be more successful later.

That said, I've had one wart that I've done everything to for years and it refuses to leave.  I've had other warts magically leave on their own, unexpectedly.  If it's truly bothersome, check in with the doctor again.  Sounds like you've done everything right, but maybe wait until the baby is out to try more...
  • When I was pregnant with DS I had small warts on both of my feet and went to the dermatologist for them. Of course they could only try freezing them due to the pregnancy but after numerous attempts they told me the best bet was to wait until after the baby was born. Then they could do more to treat it, plus my immune system wouldn't be working against me. I scheduled an appt with them for 2 months post-partum, went in for one freezing treatment and they disappeared! Obviously everyone is different, but just wanted to share my experience with you
    Good luck! :)

The only way could get rid of mine after years was when I found the band aids with the discs on them that you leave on for days. I kept that on there for awhile even in the shower and it got super gross after awhile and I was able to finally dig the whole thing out. Pretty gross.

That's basically what happens with the vinegar. The whole thing turns black and then you can dig the whole thing right out of the skin, nasty stuff.

Yeah I guess I'm probably going to have to wait until I have this baby to really get rid of it, I didn't think about how our immune system is affected by the pregnancy. But, outside of the latest time I've tried the vinegar I wasn't pregnant for any of the other treatments, I guess when I go I'll just have to ask if there are other treatments to try at the dermatologist's office.

  • I've been there. I had one causing me a lot of embarrassment next to my fingernail. I also tried many things and finally got rid of it with at-home freezing. I think perhaps the freezing you've had didn't keep it gone because it didn't go deep enough. I had to painfully freeze it, remove the white/dead tissue a few days later, and then freeze the raw skin underneath (very painful). I made sure to go deep and be thorough because I read if there's even one bit left, it will just grow back. Thankfully it's been gone for about 3 years now :)

Yeah after I dug the wart out with the vinegar, I still put vinegar in the hole where the wart was to try to kill anything left. It was extremely painful.

  • I had one on my foot that kept returning after freezing etc. Used the medicated round pads plus the liquid compound c, and after it fell off I continued treating it for another week or so. Hurt a lot but it did the trick.

When I was a kid I had warts on my fingers. Got rid of them by soaking in hot water, then covering in alovera, and then kept band aids on them all the time. Repeated routine every night and they eventually shrunk and went away.

This was after multiple attempts of freezing them off.
  • I used to have them really bad on my hands and feet and conventional therapy actually made them worse. My dermatologist sent me to a specialist. The specialist actually had me undergo this ultrasound therapy. I'd put my hands and feet in a water bath and they would run the ultrasound wand over them for 10 mins each. One day I woke up and the warts were just gone. Apparently the heat from the ultrasound deactivates the virus and makes the warts go away.

That's the strangest treatment I've ever heard! Glad it worked though.

lol I know it. I thought for sure it wouldn't work but I was so desperate at that point I was willing to try anything. To my very big surprise and happiness it did.
