The truth about hommus.. Or is this lady just plain crazy?

I was having a what i thought to be healthy snack this afternoon, red pepper hommus and pita chips. Someone at work saw me eating this and said it could be really dangerous and has been believed to cause miscarriage/stillbirth. Something about it not being refrigerated properly and a potential breeding ground for a certain trip of bacteria. Couldn't really find much on Dr. Google.

I have never, ever heard of this before.. Nor did I even think twice about eating it. Chickpeas.. That's pretty much it.

Anyone else hear anything about eating hommus during pregnancy? Just curious.

  • That's how I thought it was spelled, but the label on the tub I have is spelled hommus. Weird!

  • Because when I think of an ancient people who had access to proper refirgeration, I think of the nomadic, desert peoples of the middle east.  Not that, "people have been eating this for centuries" is a perfect argument, but I think if it were such a problem if it weren't refrigerated, it never would have become a Middle Eastern staple.  And by golly now I want hummus.  Only 2 more weeks.  Yum.

  • I consume way more hummus than the average person.  And my baby was fine.

Now I want hummus.  Anyone have any good recipes?  It's never the same when I make it at home.
  • I did read that hummus was on the "no-go" food list BUT it was a list published in Australia. This was back in like June, so don't quote me on it, but I think it was something to do with different rules on how food is processed/manufactured so it didn't apply to the US.

  • Mmm hummus. Dammit now I want some. Hummus and red bell peppers, cucumbers, pretzel thins, mmmm. For you ladies making your own homemade hummus, have you ever used powdered tahini? I had never seen it but my mom bought a two pack and gave me one. I am a bit weirded out but I am positive this feeling is completely unfounded.

Never heard of powdered Tahini. In a pinch when I'm out of Tahini I've used toasted sesame oil.

I'm Greek and eat a disgusting amount of hummus, like dip my carrots in it instead if dill or ranch... Although dill dip is amazing to ;)... Anyways all my offspring are unharmed by my consumption of it so I say enjoy! And if in craving it but don't have any tahini I just add one of my infused olive oils (garlic, pepper, I even have made it w my juniper berry infused evoo) you barely miss the tahini. :) or add roasted garlic for that bold flavor.
