Moving to Jacksonville!

Hi ladies, we will be moving to Jacksonville this summer. My husband will be working off of San Marcos Blvd downtown; what are good neighborhoods, good schools, etc? We aren't from there so we are going in blind! House budget is about 200k just so people know areas that may be feasible. We have a 4 year old daughter and our 2nd daughter will be 2 when we move

Re: Moving to Jacksonville!

  • It's kind of hard to suggest schools and neighborhoods just because Jacksonville is such a big city! If he's working in San Marco, there are a few nice streets in Avondale. Since you have children, try not to buy a home in Springfield. Orange Park would be nice (check Oakleaf and see how far away it is from your husband's job) and isn't too far from downtown.
    Best of luck to you!

  • I recommend the Mandarin area.  It is south of the San Marco area - so about a 25-30 minute drive depending on traffic.  But with Jacksonville being so big unless you live in San Marco you will have that length of drive no matter where you live.  The schools in the area have an A+ rating.  Oakleaf will be a good 45+ minute drive to San Marco.  San Marco is a historic area and has a bunch of small cute house and shops and restaurants.  I do not know the ratings for the schools in that area though.
  • Thanks girls!!
  • Just popping in to say I highly recommend St. Johns county...it is south of Jacksonville, but borders with Mandarin.  A great neighborhood is Julington Creek, and literally backs up to Duval county, but is actually in St Johns and they have the best rated school district in Florida I believe.

Mandarin is still in Duval county and their schools as a county are not great.  I do not want to send my kids to them.  Clay County (orange park like PP mentioned) has pretty decent schools as well.

Pretty  much anywhere you move to is going to be a long commute for you DH.

So I highly recommend looking into Fruit Cove, St. Johns.  Same place, just a couple of different names.

Feel free to PM if you have any other questions.  Welcome to Jax!
  • Welcome to Jacksonville! I was born and raised here and it's a great big small town. San Marco would be a good area to live but I'm not sure the availability of homes in your budget. Also Any neighborhood near the St. John's Town Center. From this area you're about 15 minutes from most parts of Jacksonville and the commute wouldn't be too bad for your husband. I live in this area and when I worked near San Marco Blvd it would take anywhere from 5-20 minutes depending on traffic.
  • I would highly recommend St Johns county as well for families and schools. There is a newer town, Nocatee, with already built communities as well as new construction in your range. It's also close to a highway to get downtown quickly. Ponte vedra is great as well but can be a commute since it's not that close to a highway. Good luck with the move!
