This kid is driving me nuts!

Lurker coming out of hiding! I'm a mom of a 27 month old boy and now another boy born 11/22. I was so spoiled with ds1, he was a dream. Never cried, starting sleeping through the night at 7 weeks, an angel! This one, not so much. I mean, he isn't terrible, just a lot more needy.

Whats been driving me nuts lately is that about every other day he won't nap unless I am holding him, which would be fine if I could sit and hold him, but no, you HAVE to be standing/walking around for him to fall and stay asleep! And he has been all over the place at night. For a little while I was getting 6/7 hour stretches at the beginning of the night, then it dropped to about 5/6, now we are at 3 or 4. And after the first stretch he is up every half hour to every hour and a half. I'm getting really nervous about how I'm going to function on this little sleep when I go back to work in a few weeks (I'm a preschool teacher in an integrated setting).

Anyone have some tricks or at least encouragement that it won't be so bad when I go back to work?

  • I'm a FTM too.  Same concerns.  My guy won't let me rock him to sleep unless I'm standing.  I've just recently discovered he loves his stroller too.  We now take 2 or 3 walks during the day to get him to sleep (the dog loves it too).  I live in the Phoenix area where the weather right now is in the high 70's.  I don't know what I'm going to do when it gets hotter.  Maybe you can try strolling him around the house?

  • Same thing here except for the past two weeks I've bounced him to sleep in my arms and then keep putting him in his crib cause I can't take it anymore .... Finally the past two days he's had over a two hour nap for one of his naps in his crib I've had to go in a few times pick him up to soothe him then back down but I think he's slowly getting the hang of it I think just keep trying to put him down and when he's ready he will sleep on his own. Hope you find something that works
  • Birthday twins! My LO was born the same day and has the same temperament! Aren't we lucky? Lol his smiles make his "particularness" worth it.

  • Lol @ elroda; that's what I told DH tonight, he's lucky he's so cute and the adorable smiles he gave me today made it all worth it.

Yes, he lets me wear him and passes out, however the minute I sit down he wakes up. I wore him for an hour today so he could get a decent nap and my back is killing me!

@elio23, I wish I could take both the boys for walks, however I'm in buffalo and its currently -2 ❄ brrrrrr. He always sleeps really good in his carseat though when we are out and about.
  • Stm here.

DS was on the needier side, much quicker to cry than DD. He likes what he likes, and never liked changes in routine...much like DH.

Your body will adjust to the new sleep schedule. Trust me. It was so trying on my body and mind, I hallucinated with DS.

  • I have figured out that when I sit and hold E when he is drifting off to sleep he thinks that I am going to feed him and becomes fully awake even when he has just ate. Walking and swaying works wonders as does wearing him. I love the glider we have for him. It does work for him by slowly swaying him to sleep. I know I am putting a band-aid on the problem and maybe even creating another one but is it what is working at the moment so i'll take it.
  • I don't really have any new advice, but wanted to share that I am also in Buffalo and have two boys almost exactly the same ages as yours!

    Enjoying the weather? :)
