Sudden decrease?!

So I am a little over 5 weeks post partum, and I have been exclusively pumping since the 1st week. My milk has kind of jumped around a bit but I always averaged 2-3 ounces total every 2-3 hours, but sometimes would get as much as 5 ounces ( morning sessions)

These past few days I have seen a very sudden drop in my milk supply and I'm really down about it! I'm lucky to get over 2 ounces now in 4 hours. Is this normal? Will it go back up? I am not on my period, I know that can effect it. And I've been doing everything the same.

Thanks for answers!!

Re: Sudden decrease?!

  • I've been having the same problem and just asked my breast feeding consultant. She said exclusively pumping will always leave milk behind compared to breast feeding, milk left tells the breasts not to make more. She said try pumping longer time periods to tell your breasts to produce more. And massage while pumping. Even try hand expressing will help. I also picked up fenugreek and heard oatmeal can help too.
    Welcome Lily Anna!

  • My lc told me your supply tends to drop a bit between 4-6 weeks. But as long as you continue the same rountine it should be bsck to normal.
  • Also make sure you are drinking a ton of water (at least 3L), I've noticed my supply dip when I've been dehydrated in the past.
  • I EBF, but I noticed a drop in supply around 6 weeks PP and I got my first PP period. With my last I would notice I had big dips in my supply a few days before and a couple days into my period(I worked and pumped at work and EP for a few months after ds weaned before a year). It always came back up though. Like other posts said, fenugeek, oatmeal, stay hydrated and pump more often and long each session.
