Pump question

So I'm going to exclusively bf this LO, but i want to buy a pump so that I can have DH feed her as well. I'm leaning toward a medela (darn pressure from the bump! Haha). Which medela would be best for this? I obviously don't want to shell out a ton of money for something that isn't going to be used exclusively, but I want something that will do a good job and last a while. Any advice?

Re: Pump question

  • You could always start with a manual and see if that does it for you. I have heard some people say the avent manuals are better than the Medela ones.

  • maybe start with a manual like PP said. I know my first two wouldn't latch right and I had to exclusively pump, so I just did a pump in style to be safe.

  • I agree with checking your insurance. I think most of them will cover pumps now. I can get an Ameda Purely Yours through mine. I was also going to get a Medela but I go with the free one ;)
  • Yes, check with your insurance company or go to medelabreastfeedingus.com.
There is a section about insurance pumps. Select your insurance plan name, your plan, and it'll list the type of pump your insurance covers and the vendor who you can place your order with. My cousin and her friend both got theirs already. My ins gave me a choice of Tommee Tippee, Ameda, & Medela - the double electric kind.
  • Definitely check your insurance.

I know the Medela website has a really good comparison chart of what pumps have what features. If you think you'll only be pumping occasionally, then you might be able to get by on a manual pump or a smaller single (like the Medela Swing), instead of going all-out on a fancy double-electric that's marketed towards back-to-work moms who want to continue BFing.

I have the medela swing and the freestyle from my first. The double is incredible cause it saves so much time but if its not something you will be doing often then the swing is amazing too. I love them both! I used to pump one bottle a day so my son was comfortable with breast and bottle. I nursed him till 18 months.
