3rd Trimester

When were you induced?

Question: As I approach week 40, I'm wondering when (or if) it was necessary for your doc to induce you. Many of my lady friends have been induced before week 40. I'm just curious, as I will be broaching the topic with my OB this week. Thoughts? Thanks!

Re: When were you induced?

  • My doc said unless somthing is going on that the baby needs to be out he won't induce me unless I am on my 40 week almost 41 week with no signs of my body going into natural labor. They don't like to take the baby now untill 39 weeks from what I've been told by my doc and nurse. Hope that helps.

  • Induction is only "necessary" prior to 40wks if there is a medical reason/high risk complication. Most OBs will wait till 41wks to induce a normal low-risk pregnancy to be on the safe side.

  • I was scheduled to be induced at 40 weeks and 6 days.... I ended up going into labor on my own 2 days before I was supposed to be induced!

I was inducuded with DD #1 at 39w 6 days due to pregnancy induced hypertension and swelling, also borderline pre-eclamptic.

I was induced with DD #2 at 38w 6days due to hypertension, swelling and low amniotic fluid. Both my girls were 9lbs and were definitley ready to be born. No issues.

  • Don't induce without a medical reason or concern until you are at least past 41 weeks, IMO.  The way that due dates are calculated is a little silly anyhow (why do they start counting before conception??) and it's really just an estimate, anyhow. Inductions increase your risk for needing other interventions and/or c-sections that you are more likely to avoid with a natural/spontaneous labor.

I was induced with my 1st at 41.5 weeks and it ended up being a good thing because the placenta had begun to deteriorate and caused some issues for LO following birth  which could have been MUCH worse had I tried to wait any longer (we didn't know this until delivery, though).  I was induced mostly because of my age, and concerns like these that begin to develop when LO doesn't come voluntarily after 40 weeks

    HTH.
  • I will be induced on my due date if LO doesn't come naturally.  This is only due to medical reasons.  Like others have said, induction should only be done for medical necessity.

  • Doctor's original plan is to induce after 41 weeks because after 40 weeks chances of stillbirth increase. But she doesn't like to induce early. Doctor might consider inducing after 38 weeks if amniotic fluid is still low. Either way, very exciting you're down to 2 weeks or less most likely! Still have 5 weeks to go until my due date.

IrishGirl26 I am having the same issues you did. The hypertension, swelling, and borderline preeclampsia. When you were induced, did your blood pressure get in the danger zone? I'm just wondering if my doctor will want to do C-section instead of induce due to my blood pressure.

  • Frankly, I would never agree to a non medical induction prior to 42 weeks. I learned this the hard way after I agreed to an induction with #1 when he was 41 weeks and it was four days before Christmas. I ended up with a very painful and unwanted c/s and I wish so much I had waited until my body was ready. I also side eye any doctor who pushes for non medical inductions before at least 41 or 42'weeks.

  • There's a lot of debate around this because some doctors will schedule your induction just to fit their schedule. I was measuring small towards the end of my first pregnancy, so my doctor didn't want me going too far past my due date. I was due Nov. 28 - induced Dec. 1st.

  • I have a 39w induction scheduled, but due to gestational diabetes. I would like to go longer, but the doctors think risks are too high waiting much longer.

I was induced at 41 weeks. I would have let him stay as long as he wanted, however it was just a common practice with my ob/gyn to induce at 41 weeks. However, my induction was wayyy better than I had ever anticipated. Everything progressed so smoothly.

  • Induced 41 weeks 2 days. Kind of wish I'd waited a little longer, until 42 weeks because the induction seemed rather hard on my body and LO. Was worried a couple of times I was going to end up with a c-section. Luckily both LO and I were just fine after birth but it took me a long time to feel 100%.

  • They induced me with my oldest daughter at 40.1 weeks!! I went in at 5:30 they started it at 7:00 & by 7:30 that night I was heading home.... I was in labor from June 3rd to June 6th
    I ended up needing a c-section
  • I was induced at 40w 4d due to high blood pressure.
  • I was coming up on week 42 when I was induced. I was willing to wait it out but my doctor recommended the induction.

  • With DD, I set my induction up when I was 39 weeks and a few days, for the following week.

DD decided to poke a whole in the membrane and due to my water "leaking" I was induced at 39 weeks 5 days.

  • I was induced at 40 weeks 3 days with dd and 40 weeks 4 days with ds because of nst results that they were worried about. I wouldn't want to be induced before 42 weeks unless it was medically necessary.

  • I was induced at 41 weeks due to the fact that my fluid was diminishing.

  • I'll be induced around 37/38 weeks due to having high blood pressure, otherwise from my understanding is that they don't like inducing early without a medical reason. They really want the baby in for at least 39 weeks.
