First birthday-any activities/games to entertain the kiddos?

Anyone planning on doing any games, activities etc for the kids at LO first birthday? We are debating on two places right now. 1 is a location that has a big playroom with all kinds of toys, jungle gyms etc to entertain kids of all ages. Nice place but the food room is a little small and playroom likes like LO daycare she sees everyday. Other place is just a big open room which is nice but I feel like we'd need to set up toys, games, activities for the kids age range1.5yrs to 6-8.

  • We are doing a sock monkey them and I am going to have a station for kids to make sock monkey hand puppets. Other than that, probably just lots of playing outside!

  • I was just at a first birthday for a cousin and I thought she did a good job. She had it at a condo party room, so she had to provide all the entertainment. She had a large quilt on a floor at one end of the room where there were couches and chairs and had toys there for the little kids. Then for older kids she has markers and coloring books at table. It was simple and worked. That being said I'm not the type of person to worry about a place being too much like LO's daycare. I think you might be over thinking it there.

  • We haven't decided if we're going to do it at our house or the park. A lot of our friends have kids DD's age so the park might be more entertaining for them. The park next to our house has foam ground so LO would be able to walk/crawl around. If we do it at our house I will have toys out for the little ones and a game/craft set up outside for the older ones

  • Nope. 1 year Olds don't play games. They won't even open their own gifts.

I certainly haven't even thought of his birthday yet, i just know it will be with family, and there will be cake. That's as far as i know.

We've still got months before they turn one!!

  • I am doing it at a picnic shelter at the park. There will only be a few kids so they can play at the playground which is directly beside the shelter.
  • I have a friend with three children and whenever she has anything at her place she has some sort of activities for the kids to do.  She says you should always have something planned so as to help keep the kids focused and not COMPLETELY destroy your house. I have not hosted a kid event yet, so I'm probably going to over plan so that I can enjoy my daughter's first birthday more. Afterall, my child will only be one. I would primarily plan activities for everyone else's kids to assist in keeping the event a pleasant one. Kids with nothing to do can be bad news. Plan and over think away. I understand.  I unfortunately have no clue what I'm going to do yet.
  • @beasleji just don't get your expectations too high! I have tried to initiate arts and crafts and I literally got a tray of supplies chucked across the room one time. And no one seemed to appreciate my adorable cupcake train last year as much as I did. I have lowered my expectations for kids parties and learned to let go because I drive myself nuts with adorable things and then no one cares. The idea of using the word "focused" and "kids" in the same sentence is totally off my radar for our group of friends. All of the kids are under 4 so that may be the issue!

  • We are having LO's first birthday at the park so the other kids can go play on the playground. We are going to grill out and provide food, drinks, and cake. We have a lot of family so outdoors is less mess for me to deal with.
