Baby A or Baby B

Forgive me if this is a dumb question but is Baby "A" always born first with Baby "B" second?  I figured that it doesn't change for a vaginal delivery but what about a C-section?

Some silly background, my DH is making a bet with a friend about the birth order, with the winner getting a bunch of food from our college town and the loser driving a ways to get it.  I don't want him to go after the babies are born so I wanted to see if I can make him go before.  I really want the food but I will flip out if he leaves me by myself for a day shortly after the babies are born.

Thanks for any advice.

  • If you have a vaginal delivery, baby A will come out first.  Baby A is labeled that because he/she is closest to the cervix.  If it's a c-section, it will depend on the babies position.  I had a c section and baby A came out first.

  • Maybe he can work a deal out with his friend that he can wait until the kids are a few months old to go get the food if he looses... this way you wouldn't be stuck at home by yourself after just giving birth and while watching 2 newborns.

FYI, my husband (who is a pediatrician) told me the babies are labelled A and B by birth order when they come out, regardless of what they had been called in utero. So even if B comes out first, it would from then on be called Twin A.

My Baby B was born first via c-section he then became Baby A as he was the first one born.  It was very confusing when I did the baby books because everything was backwards.
U/S#1 showed 2 heartbeats! U/S#2 showed Baby A's heartbeat was 157 and Baby B 's heartbeat was 183! U/S#4 showed Baby A is a Boy (heartbeat 161) and Baby B is a Girl (heartbeat 159)!! Lilypie Second Birthday tickers
  • Whoever comes out first will be Baby A regardless of how they were labelled inside.

My inside Baby A became my outside Baby A. They were born via c/s and my baby A was in distress so he had to come out first.

  • Baby A and baby B can also change while inside, mine have moved so one is on top of the other, they were previously one behind the other. My OB says there really is no way to tell since they are still tiny :) I am was week 13 at the time.
  • This thread is fascinating. I assumed that a always came out first, and they never changed.

Baby a came out first during my vaginal delivery.

  • I never realized A could come out last. Now I'm worried about my journal and ultrasound books being wrong later! Although Caroline (A) has always been low and Oliver (B) has always been very high as well so maybe it won't be an issue for me.

  • Generally they label Baby A as "A" because (s)he is closest to your cervix, which would imply they would be born first if delivered vaginally.  You never know which one will come first during a Cesarean, though the doctor should know if they are pulling out A or B first, for reference reasons.

  • Well if you are having a girl and a boy then it shouldn't be too hard to tell them apart :)
