S/O starting solids & food allergies

For those of you who have older LOs and don't have any food allergies yourself (or dads) did LO develop any? If so, when did you start feeding solids? I'm genuinely curious because it seems that since food allergies are mostly hereditary, it would mean that the newest guidelines are a bunch of hooey. Yes? No? Do I have it backwards somehow? Educate me!

  • FTM here. We do not have food allergies on either side of the family, but anything that could help discourage them from developing I am game to try...lol

  • Not sure how any of this is related to starting solids.

I have a slight allergy to tomatoes.  If I eat too much I just get an upset stomach for a few hours.  Nothing major, no vomiting or diarrhea, just don't feel great.  My dad and brother are also allergic to them.  I was FF.

DH and I are both lactose intolerant.  We can both eat certain amounts and have certain dairy products that trigger it worse than others.

DS1 has no food allergies and is not showing any signs of lactose intolerance.  We started him on solids (rice) at 4 months.  He was also on soy formula due to his reflux for the first 7 months then we switched over to dairy after he outgrew his reflux to see if he was lactose intolerant or if all his issues were reflux (they were).

Have not started any solids with DS2 yet (he's only 3 months).

  • My oldest is allergic to nuts, shellfish and eggs. She's 13, so I don't remember exactly when we started solids. We have no food allergies on either side of the family and she developed them out of no where when she was about 8. Food allergies, like environmental allergies, can literally just come out of no where and happen. There really isn't a large hereditary component to them though.

  • It relates to solids because there is a study that shows if you introduce solids between 4 & 6 months of age. It can help reduce food allergies.

If you are referring to my response, I was talking about my allergy and intolerance relating to DS1.  I understand the whole concept of the allergies and when solids were started (truly not being snarky if this sounded that way).

No problem. Sometimes I fail at trying to explain things because words can be hard.

  • DD has no allergies of any kind and I started her on purees and cereal pretty early.  I don't remember how early because that was a LONG time ago.  Don't remember how early we started solids either.  Boo.

actually 6 months you have the greatest chance of reducing allergies.  this 4 month talk is making ME break out in hives

I'm so confused... Lol I thought the newest research suggested 4 - 6 months. I'll have to do some non-bump investigating.

    Bump burp.
  • I don't have food allergies and neither does DH. DS is almost 4 and has no allergies. I EBF for 6 months and started solids at 6 months then table foods at 11 mos I think. Plan to do the same with dd. I think 4 months is too early so it will be closer to 6 at my house.
  • I have no food allergies and neither does DH, but DS1 just started having allergic reactions to random things like barbecue sauce and cinnamon apples. This past Friday we had Chinese takeout and his lips started swelling! And it was all food he had had before! He started solids about 4.5months!
  • DD1 and DD2 started solids a little after 4 mos...but they were sooo ready. No allergies. This LO is sooo not ready. He's 18 weeks and I think I'm gonna hold off for at least another 3 weeks. We'll see.
  • Oh, me and my FI have no food allergies.
