June 2014 Moms

*~*Born To Run June Bug Check-In*~*

This is a weekly thread for runners who are due June 2014, that is posted on Mondays. All who run--or who want to start running--are welcome, regardless of mileage, pace, ability, size, shape, or terrestrial status. This is a place to talk about running while pregnant, training, runs, races, gear, recovery, nutrition, and whatever else we can think of.

Anyone who posts here regularly should feel free to start the thread on Mondays if it seems to be missing.

How were your runs this week? Lay it on us...

GTKY: Are you doing any special stretches before/after running? Have suggestions on making recovery faster after a run?

Re: *~*Born To Run June Bug Check-In*~*

  • How were your runs this week? Lay it on us I ran 4.4mi yesterday. I felt much better than last weeks run and definitely not as sore this time. I am embarrassed by my pace now though. I am slower than molasses now. I've lost a lot of muscle strength in my legs and endurance after my 5 week break and it is discouraging. I am having to take short walk breaks, which I never did before.

GTKY: Are you doing any special stretches before/after running? Have suggestions on making recovery faster after a run? I need help with this ladies. I stretch like I always have before a run but I am noticing my quads are locking up and my pelvic bones hurt after a run. I put on my support belt after my run, which helped prevent any pressure feeling but I still have a sore crotch for lack of better words.

Last week wasn't great.  I got one run in and I ran on the treadmill for an hour (run 10 min/walk 2)  It was fine when I was doing it, but my pelvis as not happy later.  It's too much for me right now so I won't attempt that again.  45 minutes is my new limit.  DH and I went to a spin class on Friday so maybe we will go there more often - I enjoyed it!   Hoping to have a better week this week!

GTKY: Are you doing any special stretches before/after running? Have suggestions on making recovery faster after a run?

I always stretch my hips because they are always achy pregnant or not, but other than that I don't really do anything special.  I'm really bad with stretching!

Last week, not great.  I only ran once for a little over 20 min and was having some significant belly and back pain towards the end.  Slowing down did not help.  I ran again this morning and felt great!  No pain at all.  Go figure.  I guess I am taking the whole running thing one day at a time.  Listening to my body.

GTKY: Are you doing any special stretches before/after running? Have suggestions on making recovery faster after a run?

Nope, no stretching (I'm terrible).  Kinda just what I mentioned above, listening to my body and not pushing through any pain.  On the days I don't feel up to running or anything high impact, I either do something low impact (walk, swim) or rest.  I do find I can't do anything too strenuous 2 days in a row without feeling totally wiped, so I've been trying to alternate running/lifting/spinning days with a walk, swim, or rest day in between.  I used to like 3 days on, 1 day off but now I sometimes need 2 days on, 1 day off.  Just depends.

  • How were your runs this week? Lay it on us... Good, but infrequent. I got 3 runs in for a total of 12 miles. My long run on Saturday (6 miles) was on the treadmill and I nearly wanted to tear my hair out from boredom. I miss sunlight and above 20-degree temperatures. Oh, and I had to take my first ever mid-run pee break about 1.5 miles in. Now I'm worried about having to stop during my race next month!

GTKY: Are you doing any special stretches before/after running? Have suggestions on making recovery faster after a run? I stretch my IT band after every run now, since being diagnosed with IT band syndrome. I need to start working with my foam roller again, too. It's hard to motivate myself to do it after short midweek runs, but I always spend about 10 mins stretching everything out after my Saturday long run.

  • How were your runs this week? Lay it on us... Not bad... I got in 3 runs for only about 8 miles total.  I walked more last week though...  Overall I felt great, slow, but great.  Been a little sore in my legs but nothing major.  My tailbone though... I feel like an old lady when I get up and start walking!  Anyone have that issue??

GTKY: Are you doing any special stretches before/after running? Have suggestions on making recovery faster after a run?  Nothing special, maybe a little more than normal.  Make sure to get my quads and my hips stretched out before and after.  No suggestions, but I've been told chocolate milk is a great post-workout "snack", which I take to heart and drink while I cook dinner after our runs...

Keep it up ladies! Half way through pregnancy (and longer!) and still running!

I have had that tailbone pain here and there (started back in the 1st tri!).  I don't believe it's from running as I read about it online.  Something about everything inside shifting and getting bigger can sometimes put pressure on the tail bone so it's one of those lovely pregnancy side affects that you can't do much about!  Yay!

Yeah,t I was afraid of that... I asked my mother-in-law yesterday, she laughed and said hers still hurts...  So, all in all, if I have to have a symptom I guess its not the worst one...

  • How were your runs this week? Lay it on us...

My runs were great! I was out of town for a few days so ran in the mountains on a great snowy trail. Today was a gym day after 3 longish runs in a row.
I'm worried about how the 3rd trimester will go. I already am pretty big for how far along I am so I suspect I will be having a HUGE bump!

GTKY: Are you doing any special stretches before/after running? Have suggestions on making recovery faster after a run?

No special stretches and no suggestions on faster recovery. I typically feel pretty good after runs.

  • Warning: TMI

I'm guessing crotch sweat gets worse and worse as you progress.  Today, I ran on the treadmill and then did some strength exercises.  I sat down on a machine to do some lat pull-downs and when I got up, the seat was seriously soaked.  I was not the only one in the gym and as soon as I got up, I'm sure my face turned bright red I was so embarrassed! I wiped down the machine as fast as I could and left without finishing my work out.  Note to self:  bring a towel and sit on it next time!

  • How were your runs this week? Lay it on us... My runs have not been great but a lot of that has to do with DD. She's in the "I hate the stroller" phase. It's been a struggle running with her. She's even figured out how to unbuckle herself and tries to stand up in the stroller while I'm running. I've decided I'm not even going to bother with the double BOB. I'll just have to take Pipsqueak for runs when DD is at daycare or something.

GTKY: Are you doing any special stretches before/after running? Have suggestions on making recovery faster after a run?
I do active stretches before a run. Basically I do squats, lunges, leg swings, etc. After running I walk for a bit and then do the basic leg stretches. I don't know if it makes recovery faster but I drink a lot of water and usually eat a banana after a run.

  • @kinipela7  I'm sorry, but I laughed so hard when I read your post!!!  I can relate. I'm wearing pants now so in case some sweat drips it won't roll down my leg... I haven't lifted in way too long, but the last time I did I recall abnormal sweat accumulation on the seats.
  • @tonyacody06 - I stalked your blog and made the "OMG Chicken" recipe for dinner tonight.  Yum, it was a BIG hit!  This will be going into our dinner rotations!  Loved it!

  • How were your runs this week? Lay it on us...
Awful. After my weird cramping experience last Monday, and the bitter bitter cold wind, I finally ran 2 miles today. No cramping, but legs like lead and SO much pressure on my bladder!!! (see last week's thread for review on support band)

GTKY: Are you doing any special stretches before/after running? Have suggestions on making recovery faster after a run?

@TonyaCody06 - yoga has helped with leg and pelvic pain. Rolling my foot around on a tennis ball, for circulation and a little massage, helped my legs, too.

Question - any second+ time mamas... how did you "know" when it was time to stop running? I don't feel ready to stop, at least mentally, but between the peeing, and the cramping, and the backaches, I am starting to wonder when it's time to throw in the towel. What hurts mentally is that I registered for a 5k with some friends March 2, and I really hoped to at least run/walk it. Any tips for when to push and when to stop?
  • How were your runs this week? Lay it on us...they were ok. I only did 15 miles compared to my usual 20, which I'm fine with. I've been doing 3 mile runs. the 5 milers were getting too difficult. The calf pain is rediculous! I feel fine otherwise but its really painful.

GTKY: Are you doing any special stretches before/after running? Have suggestions on making recovery faster after a run? Not really...I keep thinking I should be doing yoga...wish my gym did prenatal yoga!

This is my 1st pregnancy running but you should stop if you can't keep up with hydration, start contracting, bleeding, or are in physical pain. My OB said keep going as long as my hips & legs let me.
  • How were your runs this week? Lay it on us i finished 3 miles and it just occurred to me that we are not only making a person, but carrying extra weight!  i don't know why i didn't think about this before, but it is obviously harder to run when there is 15 lbs sticking out of your stomach lol. i now pledge to give myself a break, which is hard because i am so competitive. its no big deal that my mile times are almost 2 mins slower.  its no big deal if i cant run my entire route.  i am proud of myself and all of you for being able to even go out there and run at all!  nice work june bugs ;)

GTKY: Are you doing any special stretches before/after running? Have suggestions on making recovery faster after a run? i am not a fan of stretching especially since i am super inflexible, so i go to yoga 1-2 times a week to trick myself into stretching. it also calms me down a bit and helps with sleeping.  my hips and ribs are sore so i am working on my posture and trying to be better with using my foam roller.

  • I'm a FTM so I don't know how long I will be able to keep going, but I feel mostly good for the time being - just be sure to listen to your body because we are all different.  My pace has drastically slowed and I am including walking breaks.  A new thing I started this week is that I absolutely cannot run 2 days in a row, so I run on Mon/Wed/Fri and just incline walk on Tues/Thurs.  I plan to just keep making modifications.  I still have to pee all the time and that pressure is always there when I run, but it doesn't HURT so I keep going.  I ignore it and don't even bother to go pee during workouts anymore because it doesn't even help.  I always have the FEELING I will pee.

  • FTM here also, and my goal is to run until the very end, but of course I know that might not be possible. I'm already slowing my pace significantly, reining in the distance runs and taking pee breaks when needed (though, like you @Kinipela7 I try to run through them because I know half the time it won't yield anything, lol). My doc is a runner and is fully supportive of me continuing to run as long as my body can handle it. I don't have any cramps/pains during or after running, so I will keep it up as long as I continue to feel this way.

My calf pain is terrible too! I constantly have to stop to stretch them out. Why is this happening? Just from the extra weight?
  • @jldcjs have you tried a banana or Tums before a run?
  • @jldcjs have you tried a banana or Tums before a run?
No, I haven't...you think it is a potassium issue? The muscle feels really sore, like it is working really hard. The other issue is that I start to get pins and needles in my foot (only my right foot). Could that be connected?
  • yes or calcium. the Tums has calcium
  • Thanks, @TonyaCody06- you're right! Probably time to back off, and my friends will understand if I'm not running the 5K with them!
@Kinipela7- that's how I feel. Just so much pressure, and feeling that you have to pee, even if you don't! Others have said a support band helped, but it hasn't helped me much. May work for you?
  • @nicolinab - I have not bought one yet.  I've talked with several runners that have run all the way to the end and most of them never needed the band.  I'm just reluctant to buy one because I don't know if it's going to make a difference and I don't know how the rest of my body is going to handle running once I hit 3rd tri in a few weeks.  It's just $45 dollars I would rather not spend if I don't need to.  That said - I do feel a little more comfortable when I wear maternity bottoms that have a fold over waist.  I don't fold the waist over and it feels like I'm not bouncing around everywhere.

  • At the medical supply store, the bands were $48, but I got mine for $30 on Amazon. If you decide to try! :) That's good that the pants help.

  • ok, i am on a serious runners high right now so forgive me if this sounds a bit SS or nuts.  after averaging 9-10/minute miles for the last couple of months, i just ran 8:15/mile!  ok, now the weird part.  while i was running i started to laugh a bit because i was imagining what baby boy is doing in there during the run. i got a visual that he was running along with me lol.

oh, also be sure you all pick up your feet when you run especially if you run outside. i noticed that with my extra weight i am shuffling a bit and dont want any of us to trip :)
