Having trouble soothing your newborn? Try Happiest Baby on the Block!

A friend reccommended this book as soon as I told her I was pregnant. I bought it right away but never got around to reading it. Since I'm lazy, ahem, I mean since I'm busy caring for my 2 week old, my husband and I watched the video last night. There is a DVD for sale and it's also available on Amazon Prime and iTunes for 9.99.

We've been using the techniques and most of the time they work just as shown in the video! We use the Summer Infant swaddles with the velcro so no swaddling expertise necessary :) I don't have a particularly fussy baby but it's great to get her calmed down quickly. I'm still working on getting her from my arms into the crib but, hey, she's a 2 week old sleeping mostly in her crib so no complaints here!

Has anyone else read the book/watched the video? Is it working well for you?

  • I have a super fussy baby and have the happiest baby on the block DVD. I though my son hated being swaddled but since we watched the video and started using the techniques, it's been a lifesaver. We all sleep better and he seems less fussy. I use whatever blankets I have on hand. I will say that he still hates sleep sacks. How does he know he difference? Also, I downloaded the white noise app and don't have to shhh in his ear all the time.

  • It was a lifesaver with DD and we are still using the techniques with DS. Excellent book/DVD!

  • I JUST talked to my cousin about this 39 mins ago. She recommended the 5 s's: Swaddle, side (lay on left side while swaddled), shushing, swinging, sucking. I'm planning on lying her down on her left side while swaddled tonight. I need to sleep. It's wearing on me now.

  • Before having my first, we borrowed the DVD from our library. It's great! Dh and I laughed at the shhhhhhhing your baby but it works!

Same here! The shhhhhhing in the video seems so forceful! We have been using a white noise machine or the sleep sheep instead of shhhhhhing.

  • We just watched the video last night after having it for months. Swaddling is a challenge because Julia has really strong arms and when she's fussy, it's almost impossible to get them down by her sides. And she always gets her bands out of the swaddle sacks. But the few times I've been able to get her swaddled today, she calms down as soon as I lay her on her side. We don't really have nighttime sleep issues with her but the excessive fussiness during the afternoon and evening are really difficult and I'm hoping the DVD will be able to help with that.

  • It's actually funny how instantly the switch flips when we swaddle or shush Jude. It's amazing, wonderful, empowering and reassuring. I just bought a second white noise machine to have in the living room, in addition to the bedroom. Also, DH discovered that turning on his electric razor next to the changing table keeps him totally zoned out during diaper changes. At risk of sounding totally infomercially, I'm so happy I read the book!
