Stay at Home Moms

preschool

Ds just turned 3 & at his appointment the dr asked if he was in school yet? I replied no & that we were planning on prek next year.
For those who didn't put their kids in preschool how did they do transitioning to prek from being at home?
Ds is a very outgoing boy & does very well with other kids. He can count to 20, knows shapes, 123, ABC & listens pretty good. He's very energetic!
I was just curious what other sahm do.

Re: preschool

  • Both of my kids only did one year of preschool before kindergarten. They both did well transitioning into preschool and then into full day kinder. They both really enjoyed preschool and wanted to go. They both went 3 days a week and DD would beg to go on the other days. She loved it.

  • Both of my kids did three years of preschool and while that is not the bump norm it is the norm around here.
  • DS started th past fall at 3.5 and its been perfect for him. He's in a play based program 3 hours twice a week. Next ear he'll go 4 days which I think we be a nice transition for K the following year. We hesitated on sending him at 3 vs 4 but we had a new baby coming and thought it would be nice to give him his own thing and it was 100% the right choice

  • My oldest only did one year of preschool prior to kindergarten and he transitioned just fine.
  • Where we are (near Boston), 2 yrs. is common. The school we chose is set up for 2 years, and in the first year, lots of little friendships begin. My kids were lucky enough to move on to full day kindergarten with 6-7 littles that they met when they were 3. Socially, I think it helps...I only work pt, but my mom watched the kids when they were little. We liked that it gave her time during the week to get her stuff done -- because she'd always want to be with them if she could :), plus, it helped them to learn to get in lines, share toys without a parent or grandparent there. They were in school 2 mornings at 3, then 3 mornings at 4. Once in a while if I'd be done with work at 1 p.m., I'd leave them for lunch bunch for an extra hour. My kids loved it!
  • We do 2 years of preschool - a year at 3 ( 3 day) and year at 4 (4 day). We have full day kinder and it's a 6.5 hour day plus bussing, so I wanted to transition slowly into that. It's not so much academic as social.

I feel the same way about preschool. I didn't send him for academics. I'm sending him so that he learns how to function in a classroom, interact with his peers, etc. Ive heard the argument that if a kid does Gymboree or music class or whatever they're getting the same benefit. Absolutely not- those are all parent & me classes and you don't get the routine of being in a classroom and aaa from mom and dad.

  • We are doing 3 years of preschool. DD is currently two and she attends two 5 hour days a week. When you take out nap and lunch, it leaves about 2.5 hours of activity time. I think it is good for her to have a chance to socialize without me there as a safety net. With that said, I don't think 3 years is the norm around here.

  • My kids will all have 3 years of preschool. They go 2 days a week at age 2 and 3 days a week at ages 3 and 4. My kids love school and couldn't wait to start when it was their turn. It has nothing to do with academics for us...just fun and getting used to a school routine.

  • DS did two years of preschool starting at 3.5 years old. He did T/Th the first year and MWF the second year.

DD will do the same starting this fall.

I can't imagine there's any difference in a 3 year old adjusting to pre k vs a 4 year old. my son transitioned fine--no adjustment or tears at all. he was ready. dd hated it and cried a lot the first day. the second day she cried a little bit and was uncooperative. by day 3 she ran to her teacher without even saying goodbye to me, was fully cooperative with everything and has loved it ever since.

  • Everybody starts MDO/preschool at 2 or earlier.

By the time DD starts kinder this fall she will have had 3 years of some sort of schooling.  1 year in Montessori & 2 years in Pre-School.  Personally I think the 1st 2 years were more so I could have some me time & not be with DD 24/7.

  • We are only going to do one year of preschool, though most people around here do two.
  • With DD, we did a co-op 2x/week at 2, now she's in a traditional preschool setting 3x/week and we'll do 3x/week at age 4, as well.

  • My boys started preschool/MDO at 2. That seems to be the norm here. My oldest is in Kindergarten now, but his PreK last year was M-Th from 9-noon. He transitioned just fine; no issues. My youngest is 3 and he goes to preschool twice a week from 9-3. He will go three days next year from 9-3.
