What are you doing with crib bumper?

If you guys have a crib bumper, what are you doing with it? Keeping it til little one is a toddler and can't get trapped anymore? Throwing it away/selling it? I was given a crib set by a nice lady at Church and I planned on using the bumper just for newborn pictures of her in the crib, removing it, and then....wasn't sure what to do with it.

  • I never got one, but I know people who fashioned theirs into a wall hanging, a bedskirt or valances for the windows.

I was wondering if it could be crafted into something. Hmm...
The set she gave me was outrageously expensive from Serena & Lily and I'd hate to just trash it.

  • I never got a bedding set with DD, but I did get one of those breathable bumpers for when she was under 6 months and still using a pacifier (kept it from falling out and behind the crib in the middle of the night). I wouldn't put them in a crib with a toddler, because they can step up on them and get (fall) out of the crib. I'm pretty sure I'll use the ones I had for DD in LO's crib once he starts sleeping in there.

  • We put a bumper in sons bed when he was about a year and a half because he kept sticking his legs through the slats & getting stuck. It helped, but we moved him to a regular bed 9 months later- so I'm not sure it was worth the money I spent. But if you have one already, maybe just store it away for some future point that you might find it useful.
  • I use it for my DD who would stick her legs thru the slats, now she can't and doesn't get stuck
  • Graham's stayed in his crib until he actually slept in there over night. And then I took it out from about 6-15 months. And then put it back in, and using it again.

  • You might want to just hold on to it. When DD was 10 or 11 months old I had to put hers on because she kept waking herself up bonking her head all night.

  • I purposely bought a bed set that didn't have bumpers (suffocation risk). I'm not sure that I'd feel comfortable using them until after LO is 2 years old anyway. It is illegal to sell them in bed sets in some states. I do have the breathable bumpers and will most likely use them.

  • Thanks everyone. I was also given a breathable bumper but don't think I'll use either for a while. I'll just hold onto them like others mentioned. I have a feeling they will come in handy in the future when she has more control over herself.

  • I used bumpers with both kids when they were much older and I knew they weren't going to suffocate themselves but they kept getting limbs stuck.  This time around, when I went to get them out of storage, I thought I saw mold (DH says I was crazy) but I threw them out anyway.  Not planning to use them this time at all.  But then again, I definitely remember both kids screaming bloody murder in the middle of the night b/c they had gotten their legs stuck up to their thighs in the crib rails when they were nearly a year old.  Not looking forward to repeating that...

  • I used breathable bumpers once DS was wiggling more, just to keep pacifiers in the crib.

He still got his arms and legs stuck, just over the bumper. My friend who used non-breathable bumpers had her dd get her arms stuck as well and she'd also still get bruises from bumping the bars with her head through the bumpers.

Beyond keeping pacifiers from falling between bars, I think bumpers are fairly useless.

  • I put my bumpers in now because LO won't be sleeping in there for a while. they'll come out once she moves into her crib but I plan on putting them back when she's older.

  • I have beautiful bumpers (came with bedding set) that are in the crib for show at the moment. When LO actually starts sleeping in her crib ill put breathable ones in there instead and probably put the pretty bumpers in storage or something.
  • With DS1, I used them as a teething guard at the top of the crib rail. This time around, they're window valances.

  • I didn't get bumpers with my bedding set. But, I did pick up some breathable bumpers on clearance a couple weeks ago. They are on the crib now, but LO won't be in there for awhile.

  • We put it in but LO won't be in the crib for a month or so anyway. But when we put him in it we will more than likely take it out and put in a mesh one until he's a little older.
