Best bottles for breastfed babies?

I am a FTM and about to start my registry list. I plan to breastfeed while on maternity leave, and pump/ bottle feed during the day once I go back to work full time.

I went to BRU last night to browse around and was so overwhelmed by all the bottle choices. I know every baby is different, but I'd like to at least narrow it down to a few different ones to register for. What bottles worked the best for your breastfed baby??

Thanks!

Re: Best bottles for breastfed babies?

  • There are a few that are modeled after the breast, supposedly so there is less nipple confusion. They tend to have a wider nipple base than most. Tommee Tippee is one of them.  I will say that they must be fairly similar because C has the same problem latching onto those that she had latching onto me, go figure.  If I were you, I'd pick a wide nipple and a regular nipple bottle and register for a couple of each.  That way you can see what your LO works best with.  We ended up using Doctor Brown's and loved them.  C was able to latch and we got into a good system for washing all the parts as needed.

  • We ended up using Dr Browns wide necked bottles. We tried a ton but those were the only ones DD would actually use consistently.

  • I'm getting the medela pump....any good nipples to fit on to those bottles? The medela nipples look huge...

  • @eltrain5 - the playtex nipples fit those, and medela makes nipples, too.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • We used Tommee Tippee and he transitioned great from breast to bottle!

  • DD used Dr. Browns in the NICU so we just kept using those. One suggestion is to continue using the newborn nipples on any bottles. They have a slower flow closer to the breast. We didn't switch to faster nipples until she started collapsing the newborn ones and getting frustrated around 9 months I think.

  • With DD I used mOmma by Lansinoh. She nursed and wouldn't take any others.

  • As some PP said, we used Dr. Brown's and DD never had a problem. She very rarely got a bottle but it never confused her while BF. We stayed with the NB nipple the entire time.

Any standard neck bottle will screw on to the Medela pump parts. I did this frequently with DS, we used Dr Browns and often I would pump directly into them to save a Medela bottle to wash. Or in a pinch I would pump into the Gerber cheap-o bottles if my other ones were dirty.

  • Another vote for Tommy Tippee.  They are wide-ish like the breast AND they are easy to clean.  We also had some Dr. Browns and DS liked those fine too, but I much preferred the fewer pieces and ease of cleaning the Tommy Tippee ones.

  • Another vote for the Playtex drop-ins.  Since I was washing pump parts every night, I was glad not to have to wash a bunch of bottle parts, too!

  • My daughter would only use tommee tippee. If I wasnt home to nurse that's all she would take with my husband.
  • With DS1 I started off with the Tommee Tippee bottles and I do think that part of the issues we started having breastfeeding stemmed from a bottle preference. We eventually used Playtex Ventair bottles because he seemed to do best with those. Since then, Medela has come out with a bottle that is supposed to be zero flow unless baby is sucking. I think it is called Medela Calma. It sounds like the closest you can get to replicating how they nurse from the breast. I plan to try these first this go round.

  • Tommee Tippee! We tried all different kinds of bottles with DS (I fed off the boob for a few weeks but had trouble latching and it was too painful so I started to exclusively pump). TT worked the best. We tried the Comotomo, Similac, and Avent, and even though DS wasn't picky, the TT was his and our favorite. I'll definitely be using them again with this baby whenever we transition to bottle.
  • I tried Tommy Tippee, Avent, Born Free..all flowed too fast for DD.

The only one she would drink out of was Dr. Brown's..they're a pain because of all the parts..but I was just glad she took a bottle.

I just wouldn't buy the huge sets or too many until you know what brand your LO will take.
