s/o milestones: walking

So DD spent the whole day getting into a position where she is balanced on one knee, like a football coach.  It was super weird.  She would crawl over to play with some blocks and then do the perch to play with them.  Sometimes instead she would get on both knees.  She's been unconsciously letting go when she is standing for quite a while (i.e. she'll be playing with a toy with both hands and stand that way for a minute or so before she realizes and then sits down).  I always thought that she would take her first steps between DH and I but whenever we do this, she leans back--like she would literally fall flat on her back if I didn't catch her.  Did your LO stand up first and then walk or take steps after pulling up?  I don't care what DD does, it just makes me feel like she is saying "stop it mom, don't help" when she refuses to let DH and I pass her back and forth.

Re: s/o milestones: walking

  • Mine started pulling up first then walking along furniture. Then he would let go and stand there not realizing he let go and then last he'd let go trying to get from one piece of furniture to another, the rest is history! Good luck!!

Well, to clarify, DD has been walking with us holding her hands for about 4 months.  I'm sure it was a disservice because she would not be balanced at all and it was sort of half walking/half swinging like monkey.  We don't do it much anymore because a) our backs and b) I started letting go and she doesn't trust me.  She used to try to get baby-sitters to do it, but she's kind of over it now.  Before that, when she was very young, she would stand up when I would hold her hands by leaning back.  Apparently this is bad because you use the wrong muscles to stand, and I think she still associates leaning backwards with standing.  She does not like to walk while holding my single hand or with her push toys, but she can.  She's been cruising on furniture for quite a while, but has zero interest in moving between two pieces if it means she has to take steps without holding on.  She's a good leaner and also good at going to crawling and back up to the next piece.   I think with this coach move she's either practicing her balance  or she's actually going to stand up and then take steps from that position.
  • We had our first step and a half yesterday! Wooo! He has been holding on one handed and cruising around his play yard. Yesterday morning he let go and stood there and waved at me. He fell. A few minutes later he did the same thing but took a step forward, lifted his other leg to take another step and went boom.

    I've never been prouder. :-)

DD first pulled up to stand and in a day or two she was cruising (6.5 mo), a month later she was letting go and walking with holding hands (7.5 mo), a month after that she was taking a few steps here and there on her own but just between us and the furniture (8.5 mo). Another month and she was walking all over under any circumstances (9.5 mo). She didn't sleep for three or four days after that. That was fun.

We didn't push her about it, we did a bit of gentle encouraging but mostly we left her alone to figure it out on her own.

ETA: she started standing without pulling up about a week after she was walking well. She would downward dog and then stand.
