Babies: 9 - 12 Months

feeding questions

Right now ds is using NUK bottles with the learner spouts instead of nipples when he's not breastfed.  Assuming that qualifies as sippy cups, even though we have the 5oz ones, they are still too big, heavy, and hard for him to use, even with the handles, while sitting in his high chair.  Any suggestions for sippy cups that are smaller and lighter?  Spill proof is not a requirement.

Ds's developmental delays mean he doesn't feed himself yet.  I am wanting to start transitioning him to table foods for more meals than just "stew night", is there anything other than honey, and nuts,(and milk, soy, apples, and pears due to allergy/intolerance) that I shouldn't be giving him?  I'm a bit reluctant to give him real meats yet since his mouth isn't strong enough to chew bits of them yet.

Re: feeding questions

  • My daughter couldn't ever do anything with the handles, but does great with the take and toss sippys (I put the Amazon link below).  She can almost, but not quite, lift her own 6 ounce bottle while sitting, but can easily drink from the take and toss when it is full of water.

    Good luck!

  • We introduced solids at 6 months. My pediatrician said other than honey we could give our little one anything that could be blended. We started with sweet potato, carrots and roasted pumpkin, all blended individually to make sure she didn't have allergies. Avocado is another great starter food. After that we started blending combinations. Chicken with roasted pumpkin was always a hit so was roasted pumpkin and banana, and white beans with avocado and spinach. A few weeks ago we went to sweet tomatoes for dinner and gave her some hard boiled egg, kidney beans cut in half and chopped cooked broccoli; she loved it and now only wants to feed herself. The cut up beans are a great finger food, they travel well on the go and give her protein and fiber. She also loves eggs, I make a scramble with 1 egg and add chopped broccoli, spinach or grated zucchini and she loves it.
  • We used these with our first because the angle means they don't have to tilt it as much to get liquid out.

  • We use a straw cup... they don't have to tip the cup at all, and I read that it's better for teeth and development than sippy cups. Just a thought. we have the playtex straw cups, and you can also squeeze the cup to help bring the liquid up the straw when they are learning... but they are easy to suck out of!

  • My son HATED the sippy cup with handles.  He would throw it around, but wouldn't drink unless someone else tipped it back for him.  Solution - straw sippy cup. Some of the no-spill sippy cups require the child to use their lips to "pinch" the straw and that didn't work for him at all.   Munchkin makes a good no-spill one that doesn't require the pinching.  All he has to do is suck like a normal straw.  He LOVES his cup now...almost more than the bottle. :)
  • My dd doesnt really like using a sippy cup unless it is to play.  She eats everything and anything.  She just doesnt eat enough of the cut up stuff to not eat a puree.  I usually give her cut up food for a snack or before her meal.  She gets bored (I think) and starts throwing the food and then when I try to give her some she blows raspberries which is her way of saying she is done.

  • Thanks.  I tried him with a straw cup.  He was able to figure out to suck on the straw but not to swallow before opening his mouth so it all ran out and he got mad that he didn't get anything.  So for now we'll practice with water in the straw cup with meals.

  • As far as foods go it just starts with your comfort level! I just recently posted something about going to more solids and had the MOST amazing post of food suggestions.

Cottage cheese (small curd) mixed with applesauce or other fruits. Fruit cups. String cheese. Yogurt. we do crackers with peanut butter (we take the peanut butter off so the flavor is still there and we can see if there are any allergies to it...None so far!) We try noodles at least once a week. A good rule of thumb is if it will desolve in a cup of water then it is safe for them to try.

I understand with allergies it is difficult to make transitions, however there are allergen free foods you can get at any supermarket as well. We tried gram crackers before i realized i was giving her honey. I was quickly advised I wasnt a horrible parent (mistakes and human error do happen)

We've also tried NUK and use their spill proof/leak proof cups with the soft tops. this way she can "play" with the cup at any given time and we dont have to worry about it. She does very well, but can get frustrated from time to time. Sounds like you are a fantastic mom and just keep doing the great job you are :)

    God bless

  • So as soon as i got home i looked and i misstated! it is a NUBY not a NUK
  • I re-read through the responses....it seems like some people read my one question as what could I give ds to eat instead of the opposite.  Other than the foods he is allergic to, honey (botulism risk) and nuts(choking hazard), is there anything I should NOT feed ds at his age.  Enough has changed in the last 15+ years regarding feeding ages and styles, not to mention child safety improvements, that I will admit to relying on the boards for hints of things that have changed.  It was through these boards that I found out winter coats and car seats don't mix.  Even the whole transition to cups earlier is new to me.
