I downloaded the birth plan off this site, and one category states what of these I would not want my newborn to have. I have researched each one, and they all seem to have pros and cons. What are everyone's thoughts?
vitamin k- to help the blood clot. you do not want your baby to suffer from bleeding that could have been prevented.
sugar water- in the nicu we would dip the pacifier in it to calm the baby if we had to stick for iv or do something that might cause discomfort. the baby wouldn't actually be "drinking" it per se, but just a little here and there to help for comfort.
I see no con to the Vit K shot - it can save your baby's life and there's no way to know if baby will need it until it's too late (since you can have a hidden bleed). The eye goop I feel comfortable declining as I'm positive of my STD status . Sugar water - absolutely no - no reason at all for it.
Im all for anything they want to give my baby. I dont know if they do eye ointment for c sections though

In our region, you cannot elect out of the eye ointment. It's required by law, even for c-sections. We do request no sugar water because I don't want it to interfere with breastfeeding. We do get the Vitamin K shot. We do elect out of the Hepatitis vaccine at birth because, quite frankly, I'm not concerned about my brand new infant getting a sexual transmitted disease so it can wait.
I do not want the sugar water or pacifiers being offered to my child. The vitamin K and eye ointment make sense to me. I want to get all the offered vaccines. I just don't want the hospital giving my child any formula or sugar.

Hepatitis is not only an STD.
Its a blood-borne illness meaning the only way to catch it is to come in contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person. This most often happens through unprotected sex or needle-sharing. If immediate family members are negative, the chances of a baby contracting Hepatitis is pretty low. Unless it's A, which is found in contaminated food, but not covered in vaccine anyway.

The wording of your post is a little unclear. There IS a Hepatitis A vaccine. So, the vaccine routinely given at birth in the U.S. does not protect against HepA, but you can (and should) get vaccinated against HepA.
Right. Sorry. I assumed we all knew I was talking about the Hep B vaccine typically given at birth which does not cover Hepatitis A. My point really was that the risk of an infant contracting Hep B is pretty low (if mother is negative). Children usually get the Hep A vaccine starting at 12 months (it's 2 doses).
