Flu and pregnancy...

SUCKS!! Got diagnosised with the flu on Thursday (yes I had the flu shot). Tamiflu causes N/V as if it wasn't bad already so therefore I haven't keep hardly anything down. My OB did prescribe phenergan suppositories which I have taken a few times to try to keep down the Tylenol due to my fever being too high. Thankful my hubby is a nurse anesthesist cause my OB wanted to admit me for IV fluids but he allowed hubby to give fluids at home.

Praying all of us stay healthy this flu season!!!

Re: Flu and pregnancy...

  • Yuck. I got the flu one year even with the flu shot. I thought I was dying. Can't imagine doing that pregnant.

  • Oh my goodness that's sad news, but at least you have your hubby to take care of you with the IV, etc. I got the flu shot on Thursday and immediately came down with a cold (no fever, but stuffy, sore throat, etc). Hope you feel better soon!!
  • Ugh, that's awful... feel better!!

  • I agree, I got the shot on Monday and was diagnosed with the flu on Saturday. I spent all day yesterday throwing up every 30 minutes, finally got some zofran and have been able to keep some food and at least my meds down. Luckily I haven't had to have fluids but glad your hubby can do them so you don't have to be in the hospital. Hope you feel better soon!

Not sure how you were diagnosed with the "flu" if all you're doing is vomiting. Sorry, this just happens to be a pet peeve of mine when a provider tells a patient they have the "flu" when they have a stomach bug. It creates a misperception and therefore peole seem to think their stomach bug is associated with the flu shot they got a week prior. The flu, aka influenza, is a respiratory illness - not a GI illness. Sounds like you have a viral gastroenteritis. Hope its short lived and you can start keeping food down.
The initial onset of illness was fever, chills, body aches, nasal congestion. I went to my PCP and was flu swabbed and it came back positive for influenza A & B. I have bad nausea and vomiting right now anyways and with the increased drainage in my throat it has made the vomiting worse. Not including a major side effect of Tamiflu is nausea and vomiting so I am sick for about 4-5hr after taking the med each day/twice a day. Hope this clears up any confusion.

Her comment wasn't to you but to the person she quoted. Not sure how you were diagnosed with the "flu" if all you're doing is vomiting. Pretty sure she was referring to the meds making her sick. I think most educated adults know that the flu is not a stomach bug, though it actually can cause vomiting. But way to shoot down the sick pregnant lady!

  • My husband gave me the flu during week 7. I thought i was going to die! Took tylenol, robitussin and as many 100 degree baths as possible. It took me out for a good week from work. Rest, fluids, soup. Make sure to change up what u r drinking. Not always water or gatorade. I am so sorry this happened to you!
  • I ended up in the hospital over the weekend with 103 degree fever (H1N1). Dr said if I hadn't have gotten the flu shot I would've been much worse off. My husband is also an RN and the Dr only felt comfortable discharging me because I had someone to stay on top of my fever. We did get an ultrasound the night I was admitted and baby was doing backflips so he/she didn't seem to care my body had turned up the heat. Feel better soon!
  • That really sucks! I hope you feel better soon.

Sorry I didn't clarify, I've been sick since Monday with cough, went to urgent care and was tested and diagnosed with flu on Saturday, after I got home and took all my meds they prescribed (after eating) I was throwing up. From the meds/tamilflu I presume. I really don't think a dr would swab you for the flu and get negative results then come tell you that you have the flu just because you are throwing up. That wasn't even a symptom of mine until taking the meds.
