1st Trimester

4 weeks and lying down causes cramping and nausea

So I'm moving right along into week 5 and I can't lay down comfortably. Every time I try to nap or sleep or even just relax, I get fairly painful cramps (not the worst I've ever had but strong enough not to be considered "mild") followed by nausea and a strong pinching/stabbing sensation.  Overall it feels like I'm getting a stomach flu or food poisoning,  but nothing ever happens.  These symptoms will ebb and flow as the pain increases and fades until I finally fall asleep. It seems to be at its worst when im on my back and right side, but slightly less painful on my left. So I'm tortured with only sleeping on my left side, and even that has pains.  Seems really early to not be able to lay down. Help ?

  • I'd call your OB/MW. I've never had this issue nor have I heard of anyone having this hard of a time with pain/discomfort. Could it be gas pains?

  • I vote call ob. I would worry about ectopic if it was me.

  • As PP suggested, are you constipated?

I had the same issue here and there-- when is lay flat is have terrible terrible stomach pains. I kept thinking "ERMERGERD something is going horribly wrong!" And then I pooled, and I felt way better.

Sorry for the tmi! But yes, try that!

  • So blood flow to the baby is best when you are laying on your left side. I would definitely call dr though

  • You're right, it does seem too early for you to be having this much pain.  I would definitely call your doctor right away and they should take your concerns seriously.  So, if they don't get you to come in right away, go to the ER.  That's what happened with me, when I was early in my pregnancy a few months ago.  I had abdominal pain constantly, and extreme bloating and finally decided it was too much,  went to the ER and found out that I had an Ectopic Pregnancy.  I had emergency surgery that day.  Follow your gut.  Even though my doctor's office, who I called twice about the way I was feeling, told me that it was normal and drink water and take tylenol, I still knew something was off.  Think about all the women you have known, who have been pregnant.  Have they ever mentioned having these symptoms at 5 weeks?  It's better to be safe than sorry.
