February 2013 Moms

? for working moms

Are you working on LO birthday? Tomorrow is ds' birthday and I work. I feel really bad about this. Which I think is silly. He doesn't care about it being his birthday. If I were off, we would wait for dh to be home to open gifts anyways. I think it is because I have been off both of dds birthdays. But they were on the weekend. I am now thinking I will start taking off on their birthdays, so I also feel bad I can take off for dd, but she does care about her birthday. She talks about it all the time.

Re: ? for working moms

  • Don't feel bad, your LO won't know. Mine LOs bday is on a Sunday so next year I will have to figure the same thing out

  • I'll be working on DS' birthday, which is Thursday. It's sort of a bummer, but like you said, he doesn't know what he's missing. We're having a good sized party on Saturday, so it's not like it's going totally unacknowledged. When he's older, I'm sure we'll play hookie on his birthday once or twice.

  • It was Saturday this year, so I didn't have to work.  But I wouldn't take off for it either...

  • I don't think I'll request off for his birthday. We'll just celebrate that weekend. NBD :)

  • I think for this birthday I wouldn't (but this year hers was on a Sunday) but I think for future ones when she is more aware I will for sure. I also have a policy that when you get shots you get a parent all day. Meaning I take off the whole day when she has dr appointments that involve shots. That or DH and I will do half and half. I feel like there are a lot of things I miss out on being a working mom, that it is worth it to take special days that aren't just because she is sick. As a school nurse I also tend to think this helps with kids not faking sick just to spend time with mom and dad, but that's a whole other story.

I say do what you want for this bday, but do maybe make a plan for something during each year that is special time you take off for.

  • I'm not this year, but we're also having a weekend party so like @DublinMama said, it's not like we aren't acknowledging it or anything. We have his 12 month doctor's appointment on his birthday so it's like Happy Birthday, here's a shot. Kind of stinks. :-( If DH takes the day off (which he generally does for the doctor appointments) then we'll probably go out to an early dinner.

  • I guess I'm the odd one out. DS's birthday is on a Friday and I'll be taking it off.

  • I am taking off. we are celebrating sunday and his birthday is monday, but i just cant bear to drop him off at day care. maybe if we had a nanny or family watching him...but i cant stand the thought of taking him to daycare on his birthday, so im taking off.
  • I am a sahm now. With ds I was working out of the home. His birthday is on New Year's day. So I never had to worry about taking off. I always said if I had another and was still there I would take off to spend my child's birthday with them. I also don't plan on sending dd to school on her birthday when she gets older. Ds will be lucky to already be off!

  • I will be working on DD2's birthday this year. It happens to be on a Thursday and Thursdays are the one day I currently work outside the house. Since I'm teaching English classes, I can't just take the day off. I have 4 hours between classes, though, and will probably go home to spend some time with her. And then the next day she has her well-baby visit with her MMR shots. Poor kid!

For DD1's birthday it depends. If I get one of the two positions I just applied for, I won't be able to take the day off because I'll have just started April 1 (but I'll only be working in the morning, so I'll still have the afternoon with her). If I do not get one of the positions and am still working from home, then whether I take off depends on whether I've got any urgent translations to do. DH is taking off for her birthday this year, though.

  • So my mom was sick, so I had to come home early anyway!
  • BTW, I am not as terrible as a daughter as that came off.
  • My company is awesome and since corporate employees get the week of Thanksgiving off, they give retail employees three paid days off to use anytime between mid-January and June. I'm a retail employee, so I'll be using those days for DD's b-day and b-day party. Her b-day is on a Thursday, and we're going to have the party the following Saturday. I feel fortunate to have the ability to request time off on whatever day...things may be different if I ever move to a corporate position and have to work Mon.-Fri.

  • DD bday is sunday this year, but if it wasn't I still wouldn't take off.  We will do parties on the weekend.  Next year she still wont be old enough to know different as long as we celebrate and by 3 celebrating at preschool will be exciting and we can still do parties on the weekend.  Maybe its the teacher in me, but I will def not be skipping work or pulling DD out of schools for any birthdays.

  • I prob won't take DS birthday off this year just because I get limited time off and I'd rather save it for a family vacation of some sort.  I think when he is older and knows it's his birthday I will.  My daughter turned 4 in early January and I took her birthday off.  We made cookies, went to lunch and went shopping, just the 2 of us.  I think i'll make it a tradition to take a day either on their birthday or close to it in order to spend some one-on-one time.
