A post below had me thinking about how many early talkers we might have on the F13 BMB.

Also, if your LO has uttered his or her first word what was it?

Re: Talking Poll and First Word Discussion

  • Ds says yum yum. He still babbles mama, but has no idea that means me. He'll say mama to just about everyone and everything.

  • DD's first word was "Bye". She said it to DH over the phone (I had it on speaker)! I call him at least once a day so she had a lot of casual reinforcement before she started using it. Now she says it all the time, at the phone, when someone leaves, when we leave, etc.

She has a few other words now too. My first word was "hello" so I sing "Hello, Goodbye" to her. I sing other Beatles songs but that one has special meaning.

  • DD's first word was "okay". She also says good girl, dada, mama, hello, hello Dada and  she waves at him. She also say her name, Lala, and also "Oh no!"  and "Aaaah choooo" for when we sneeze :-)

  • Only two words here and DS2 is on the older end for this board: dada and kitty.  I still don't rank apparently....

  • My LOs first word was Dada. She now shortens it to a drawn out Da (she says it like shes in awe of him) She says Muma but is just starting to kinda sorta associate it with me. She hears the front door open and she stops what she is doing, jumps up and says "da!" Then walks to the door to greet him. It is sooo freaking cute! She also says kitty (more like "itty" but she only says it when she sees the cat so even the cat got word association before me) Her newest is night night. I say "Lets go night night" and she runs to the stairs, waits for me then climbs up them saying nigh nigh the whole way. She also says ball and book and knows what they are. Wow, writing this out I'm feeling a little unloved that she can put words to all of these different things but not me. :) I think she is starting to mimic some things I say a lot. I've really been pushing please and thank you lately hoping she will pick up on that and sometimes some of her babbling sounds like it but I think it will be a while before she starts saying it on purpose.

Ds says a lot. He can say mama (first word) and Dada, nuhnuh is for Anna. He says dog and kitty, hi, no, yes, truck (well, tra). He says ball and my bottle (baboo is how it is pronounced). There are others he doesn't say on a daily basis like book. He can also bark.
  • I thought he said "hi" and "bye" a few times, but he was really just imitating sounds. I've been trying reallllly hard to get him to say "mama" but we're not there yet :)

  • Our LO is a major talker, mostly started from repeating lol his first word was "whoa and wow" lol he says about 20 words now and knows exactly what they mean. Every so often he will repeat you but he does not know what it means lol he also makes 4 animal noises lol one being an owl which I find odd and hilarious

  • DD is a major talker. I've lost count of how many words she has. But her first word (other than mama or dada) was book! Made her librarian mama proud. :-)

When I ask DS to say Mama he smiles and says, "Dah-dee". :P

ETA - So we're in the words with no meaning camp. I mentioned in the other thread he also calls the bamboo plant "Dah-dee" as well. My mom is convinced he says "hi" and "nah-nee" but I'm pretty sure it's just coincidental.

  • DS says "Yum yum yum" every time he eats. He sometimes says "hey", "mama" and "dada." He calls our dog, Ellie, "Eeeee!" or "Eh! Eh!" I said that he has one to two words, because again, he isn't consistent.

Do you also have a "Nonny" for a grandma?

Technically it's a Nannie but the little guy makes more of a nah sound lol

  • Lo says mam, dad, cat, yum. Its funny when she sees the cat because she'll chase after her going cat, cat, cat. Lol

  • M says cat, meow, dog, hi, mom, dad, mum mum, and nuh (no).  She said "hi" at about 6 months before she even babbled but I wasn't sure for quite a while.  She has a ton of other words but they are inconsistent and I'm not sure she's not just repeating.  I think sometimes she says "I'm done" but am I imagining it?  When I say this is a goat, she says "oat oat" and this is a duck "and she says "uh uh" but her pronunciation is so bad that I'm not even sure when she is repeating what she is saying and I certainly don't know if she is saying it later.  And she kind of gets bored of words.  She has known cat forever and I used to say " what is this?" and she would say "cat" but she doesn't do that ever anymore.  She does know the name of every toy, about 50 cards with pictures on them, and most books she has to the extent that she will choose correctly if I ask her most of the time, but sometimes not.  But she's not even close to walking...  Plus, she was born in early January so she's had more time to listen.  She was supposed to be a late Feb baby tho, so we adjust.
  • No words yet.  I hear dada and mama sometimes but am not certain he is using them to refer to us.  And he was imitating the tone and sounds of 'uh-oh' this weekend, so I think he's close.  But what is funny is that if I click my tongue, blow raspberries, or any other nonsensical thing with my mouth, he can imitate that perfectly.  Silly kid!
    Mom to 3 year-old girl and 1 year-old boy
  • Also, DD is back to some of her 5 months behaviors. She's blowing bubbles and shrieking.  I hope that this is to build her mouth muscles so she can pronounce more, but it might be because she's getting a bunch of teeth.  But the shrieking is more fun that when she was 5 months.  Now she does it to demonstrate extreme joy, such as when I pick her up out of her crib or when she balances something on a tower or when DH picks her up for fun.
  • MJ says mama when she is tired and hungry. Other then that it is all just lots of babble. I love listening to her voice!

  • This kid has a ton of words!! Even some phrases! DS1 still doesn't speak well or much. He's in speech and way behind. So, DS2 is a real trip for us; we are having to watch our mouths because sometimes we forget when it's just the baby in the room. :) His first word was Dada. He calls me Nini (why?). He says dog, Na for Nate, light, hi, get it, got it, this, that, fssslight (flashlight), ba for ball, something that sounds like "throw it" when he throws the ball. The other day DH asked who wanted cheese with dinner and C shouted "I do!" DH was like...ummm...did the baby just say that? DH and I stare in shock at each other a lot. We were both early talkers though, so I guess it shouldn't be so shocking. I miss my tiny baby though.
