Trying to Get Pregnant

Pregnancy straight after going off the pill?

Hello ladies! I hope that some of you might have had the same or similar situation. Me and my husband are planning a baby but I've been on birth control pills "Jeanine" for approximately 4 years now. There are 3 last pills left in the package, and then I'm going off. The question is - is it safe to start trying for a baby right after going off the pill? I've read some opinions that it's recommended to use condoms until the first normal period to get back to normal cycle, while on the other hand I've heard that after you go off the pill the ovulation boosts and many women get pregnant right after. Have you had any experience with this? The main question - is getting pregnant right after going off the pill safe to the baby? Is the risk of abortion higher if it happens? Thank you in advance for your opinions!

What??? I hope not. I think that's a personal decision.

I would say that it's something to talk to your doctor about. I've never heard of the BCP you mentioned but my doctor never told me I needed to "wait" to start trying after I went off the pill. I would think that it's safe to start trying but I'm no doctor.

I would ask your dr.  Mine said it was fine to try right away after the pill.

ETA: and I think you mean miscarriage, not abortion.

No advice on whether it's safe to try right off the BCP, but I believe it's generally fine.

However I think you meant miscarriage here. Not abortion.

  • There is no risk to baby once you stop taking the pill and it does not increase your risk of spontaneous abortion.

Mine wanted me off for at least two months before we started trying.  Other doctors suggest one, three, or none.  It depends.

But, if they are cool with you trying right away, then go for it.
Same. Mine suggested 4 months, but that also corresponded with what I told her about TTA for awhile due to my husband's work schedule.

  • It depends on your doctor. Mine gave me the ok to start right away after being on the pill for 8 years, while others here recommended to wait a couple months. I would talk to your doctor.

  • Talk to your doctor. Mine was fine with me starting right away after nine years on BCP, but yours may feel differently.

I'm on cycle three. A friend got pregnant on her first cycle.  A different friend has been trying for over a year.  Everyone is different.

  • Huh apparently every doctor is different in regards to this.
Mine said we could start TTC immediately after I stopped the pill, and that's what I did.  I do have a friend that got pregnant 3 weeks after stopping hers and had a perfectly healthy baby.  I'm on cycle #3 after pill.

I think it's called a spontaneous abortion, or at least I think that's what my chart says at my Dr's office. I hate that term.

Your right pinto. Miscarriage isn't a medical term.. It's called "abortion" whether it's spontaneous or planned. But your right it's a sucky word.

Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but medically sometimes a miscarriage is called a "spontaneous abortion".

Edit: That Banker biznatch beat me to it.

Yep. This. When I was getting my betas drawn during pregnancy, the order I had to bring to the lab said, "threatened abortion," as in, he thought I was probably miscarrying.

^This. I got pregnant with DD right after stopping the pill the first time around. My doctor never said a word about waiting to try.

  • I got pregnant with DS 2 months after I stopped the pill and was pregnant with DD 1 month after. My doctor said I could start right away and so we did. I have no idea what pill you were on so I'd ask your doc. From RL experience I've never heard of having to wait.
  • My doctor told me to still prevent for one month after coming off BC. He said that most women have a successful pregnancy if they conceive during that first month, but that he recommends waiting one full cycle before TTC. This is what I have done & my month is almost over, yay! It's given me the time to read up, and start temping & charting! Like everyone else said, consult your dr!

I've never heard of this waiting. I feel really bad for these ladies here who have decided to start TTC and are waiting FIVE MONTHS to start trying because their doctor doesn't know what they're talking about!?!?! What a waste. Like PP have said, the pill is out of your system quickly, which is why you have to take it every single day. Yes, it may take your body a few months to regulate itself, but that has nothing to do with the pill and safety of the baby.
