Where would you go?

If you could go on vacation anywhere on the east coast with a one year old, where would you go? Dh's parents recently brought up the idea of a family vacation this year. We'd probably go around Sept or Oct, so LO will be old enough that we'd need to entertain her somehow but I'm not really sure what kinds of attractions she'll be old enough to appreciate. We live in PA and would probably drive, so we'll need to keep it to a reasonable distance. Any suggestions?

Re: Where would you go?

  • We took our 18 month old on a cruise and that went well, there are some that leave from Baltimore.

Ocean City, MD and Ocean City, NJ are options.

We also took a cruise at 11 mos and dd had a lot of fun. Cruises are great for corralling family.

  • Sadly, a cruise is probably out. FIL travels a lot for work so he has a ton of reward points. He offered them to pay for rooms, so we pretty much have to do a hotel. I would have loved to go on a cruise. Maybe some other time :)

  • Im spending my 30th on Block Island for a week this summer.  The outer banks are also fun.

  • I would also say North or South Carolina.
  • We are going to the blue ridge mountains in Georgia. Renting a cabin and relaxing! Can't wait!

I am with crunchy on the cruises. I get seasick just thinking about it.

Assuming disney world is out of the question, I would go to upstate ny/ lake George. A lot of places will close after Labor Day, but you should still be able to find tons of stuff to do with LO. Good hiking weather then too.

OMG I went there every summer growing up! I love it!
I just don't think of it as on the coast lol

Maybe not the east coast, but definitely a reasonable drive from PA, so it's a good suggestion :)

I really appreciate all the suggestions! I'll have to see what the family thinks.

  • We are going to the beach in North Carolina in August.

Married my love 8-25-12 TTC #1 September 2012. BFP 2-2-13. DS born 10-16-13.
TTC #2 in December 2014. BFP 12-31-14. Expecting a September baby!
  • I would go to the NC coast bc my mom lives there lol we're actually going in March. The weather in NC/SC is really nice in Sept/Oct.

Edit: After Labor Day the beaches are less crowded but its still warm enough to go... Something to think about. I love Emerald Isle, it's so nice :)

    That's where we go!

Where do you guys live I'm about an hour away from there!?
  • I have been to both hilton head in sc and the outer banks in nc and both are amazing!! If you are going with an extended family the outer banks has a lot of houses very close to the beach that fit anywhere up to 35 people. I have also been to cape May and I loved it there as well and it might be a shorter distance to drive with your lo. We stayed at a bed and breakfast there since it was only two of us but I'm sure there are house to rent.
  • I'm with everyone else that has said New England.  Fairs, apple picking, leaves, mountains, ocean, Boston, Portland (Maine), Providence...  It's about 90 minutes between Boston and Portland.  About the same between Providence and Boston.  (I've lived in all 3 cities).

    I second outer banks.

  • I grew up going to Hilton head, SC and loved it. Also Boston or NH/VT area are gorgeous during the fall.

  • NC!!! FOREVERRRRR!
It has everything, incredible fall foliage on the blue ridge parkway (mountains), beautiful coast, nice clean beaches, cool lighthouses, biltmore house and tons of breweries in Asheville. Charlotte has great food and the white water center
I would also suggest charleston, sc and savannah, ga for the food and haunted tours

I'd say Charleston too, but that's my hometown so my opinion is a little biased

  • DC.  Museums are free and there is tons to do that doesn't cost a lot.  Hotels are expensive but if it is being paid for in rewards then that is a plus!

Im from NJ but my favorite place on the coast is Cape Cod Mass. Ugh I miss it so much! ♡♡♡
I was also going to suggest Cape Cod.  Can't go wrong with letting a toddler dig on the beach.
