Metformin ladies ?

I tried googling to no avail. I have been off metformin for about a month due to c. diff/colitis. As long as my test results come back okay today I will start back on it. Have you ever taken a break from Metformin? And if so, were the side effects as bad the second go round? TIA :)

Re: Metformin ladies ?

  • I did take a break once, and yes the side effects were just as bad.  :(  Good luck!

  • However, I think I should add that my obgyn diagnosed me with PCOS and my RE said I didn't have it.  So I might have been having a harder time on it anyway.  I am currently NOT on Metformin.

  • Thanks, I assumed it would be like starting all over again. Guess I better stock up on my baby wipes :)

  • Yes, I started taking met when I was 16. I was on it for several months and just couldn't deal with the side affects so I stopped taking it. Fast forward to TTC at 26 and I started taking it again. I had no side affects that time. I stopped taking it during pregnancy. Now (3 years later) I'm taking it again and the side affects are so bad I haven't been able to get up to a full dose! So it has affected me differently at different times.
    I'm 29. DH is 29.

  • I took it for about a year and a half and during that time the side effects subsided.  I started taking it again after my son was born and the the side effects didn't hit me as hard until I got to the full dosage.  I had been pretty lax about taking it with the holidays and DS's birthday and whatnot.  So, I have been more disciplined for the last week and have been so sick!  It sucks, but I've also lost like four lbs in the last week, so that's a plus, lol.

  • I took a break and started back up and I got just as sick the second time. I decided not to take it anymore though because my PCOS is caused by testosterone not blood sugars or insulin resistance. It didn't help at all so why but my poor tummy through that? Good luck though.

Thanks :) I just want to let you know, from my research, metformin helps even when your insulin and blood sugars are normal. And the tester one is high because of pcos, not the other way around. My insulin levels, blood sugars have always been normal, high testosterone is the only abnormal lab value I have ever had. Two months on met and my test levels were normal. Research states they aren't sure why testosterone levels are affected by metformin when insulin resistance isn't an issue but it does for some reason.

  • Thanks I didn't know that I figured because nothing changed when I was on it that it wasn't helping I will have to start again next cycle if this one doesn't work. I got off it once because I had my tonsils out and couldn't swallow and then this last time because of a bad stomach bug I couldn't keep them down! Didn't see the point in getting sick when restarting it but now I might just have to suck it up!
