Cervical length at anatomy scan?

I'm slightly worried about my cervical length of 3.4 cm (20 week anatomy scan). What did you measure at? Was your doctor concerned?

Re: Cervical length at anatomy scan?

  • They didn't tell me my length, so I have no idea what is normal perhaps other ladies will weigh in. Was your doctor concerned?

  • She wasn't concerned, but I'm a worrywart and wanted to see if I'm near average or below average or what. (Some websites are saying I should be 4-4.5 cm!)

  • I will get mine checked at my 20w ultrasound on Wednesday so I can let you know. I know I had it checked a couple weeks ago at 18 weeks and my cervix measured 4.92 cm. From what I've heard that is a long cervix. Anything over a 2 is good.

  • Anything over 3cm is good. Yours is good!

  • Thanks for the reassurances.  It sounds like it's on the low side of "good", which at least is still "good".  :)

  • I am 18 weeks (in 30 mins lol) I have been going weekly for cervical checks since Dec 19th.... mine measured 2.9 at start of pregnancy (due to LEEP surgeries I had 4 & 5 years ago) when I went to my weekly on Jan 16th mine had shortened to 1.9. I have been put on modified "bed rest" and put on progesterone suppositories.

you are measuring good hun. Don't worry until they tell you there is a reason for concern

Good luck with it all :)

  • My dr was worried about my cervical length due to some indicators that it could be shortening. Mine is 4.6 cm. doctor was very happy and said they don't worry until its 2cm or less. So you're fine.

I'm sorry to hear about the bed rest;  did they consider putting in a stitch?  Does the LEEP prevent them from putting in a stitch?

Thanks for the good wishes.  I hope the bed rest treats you well and that it does its job.

  • Is this something they measure from the stomach ultrasound? I had an anatomy scan at 18 weeks and didn't think to ask. Going back in at 22 weeks to do it again cause he was moving so much they couldn't get a good look at the heart. They never brought up the cervix length but I'd love to know since I also had a LEEP performed 5 years ago.
  • @SarahSmile01, I'm pretty sure that they do measure it from the stomach ultrasound, if they're able to get a good view.  I get bi-weekly cervical checks due to hx of PTL and birth.  Mine are done transvaginal, though to get the best look.

To OP, like the others have said, anything over a 2, they're happy with.  Good luck!

They done cone LEEPS, also known as a cowboy hat, they left very little and it would be extremely difficult to place a stitch but not impossible. The doctors are keeping a close eye on it and they have really built my faith in them. We knew when we started TTC that the pregnancy would be high risk, then we had the surprise of spontaneous twins!

I was on full strict bed rest with my oldest son and modified with my youngest. It is aggravating when you are an active person and the brakes get put on you BUT I will do what ever it takes to keep our angels put. :)

My OB/GYN that did my surgeries is not my current doctor, he actually moved to another end of the state. They do transvag u/s to measure my cervix, I have "tricky" cervix as they call it and it is impossible to get an accurate measurement from the stomach.

  • Oh, interesting; they measured me through the stomach wall and not transvaginally.  I have heard that the transvaginal is more accurate.

To 2blessingsin1:  I'm glad to hear you've got great doctors who are monitoring you!  And congrats on the twins!!!!  I'm a twin; it's a very special relationship!  (My twin and I are 3&4 of 4 kids)

  • 3cm is totally normal! Try to stop googling! (Not that I'm not guilty of the same)

  • I had mine measured because of LEEP with my son. It was 2.4 the entire time. They always measured transvaginally. Dr. Told me he would not even consider any modification unless I feel below 2. I continued to run the entire time, though lowered my mileage. As long as you are above the norm and you doctor wasn't concerned I wouldn't be.
  • A follow up. Since I have birth at 39 weeks exactly last time, he said no need to measure this time. "Proof is in the pudding"
  • Thanks ChristineMDF!
