Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

which milk to give?

DS drink wcm but I would like to switch him to an alternative but there is nothing really safe to give.  Rice milk has arsenic, soy milk has estrogen and almond milk has carrageenan. Is hemp milk safe? We are going to start to eliminate dairy from his diet to pinpoint the cause of his allergies. He doesn't like juice and I really don't want to give it to him anyway. Looks like the poor kid will be living on water, thats a little boring. =)

  • coconut milk or goats would be my recommendation, too.
  • We do Almond milk. We chose a brand without the carragenan in it and do unsweetened flavors. We chose it for the calcium content since upping the fat and protein in his diet is easy. Coconut milk is good, but it has no protein and high in saturated fat. Hemp milk is really good for babies too. Just doesn't taste very good. They all have positives and negatives.

  • We do goat's milk! LO loves it and tolerates it amazingly well.

I forgot about coconut milk, but what brand of almond milk do you buy?

Blue Diamond. It tastes the best too. We do unsweetened vanilla normally. I did tons of research and tried goats milk before chosing almond milk. Goats milk is super expensive and tastes faintly goat cheesy. My son refused to drink it.

  • Ok I lied. There's carrageenan in it. I still would do it over the other ones. It's high in calcium and tastes good. I just up the fats and proteins he gets. I also will make my own almond milk sometimes.

  • I don't believe Silk Almond milk contains carrageenan. I know it has the Non-GMO project stamp on it too.

  • Honestly, making your own almond milk is really really easy. Plus you get a creamier flavor and texture.

DH and I were both wondering how to make it the other night. After reading your post I googled it, it looks so easy! I'm going to have to see if I can get everything tomorrow on my quick grocery trip before yet another snow storm.
I bet it would be great in my morning coffee too.

Super good! I do mine pretty creamy though since I like that creamy whole milk type texture. My little man loves it. I do add a tiny bit of vanilla to it though for my coffee.

  • So glad I read this! I googled it as well and I am definitely going to try making my own almond milk. Thanks, ladies!

  • What's bad about carragenan?

Anyways, I have a friend who can't do sugar and tries to stay away from artificial sweeteners but gets tired of water. She tends to do a lot of herbal teas. Cold mint tea is actually pretty yummy, especially the brand "Two leaves and a bud." Just a thought for another water alternative!

Carrageenan is thought to cause diseases.

Thank you for the idea, although I'm looking for water alternatives for DS and since tea has caffeine, I think we'll skip it.  I think I'll try almond milk since the research is inconclusive. I think I'll start making him some fruit infused water also.
  • I think carageenan is a potential carcinogen, isn't it? Sad because I thought Blue Diamond almond milk tastes the best, but now I'm too paranoid to drink it. Silk has a bad aftertaste to me. My local grocery store Giant Eagle has a store brand Natures Basket almond milk that tastes better than silk, not as good as Blue Diamond unfortunately, but doesn't have carageenan in it.

  • You realize that everything is a potential carcinogen? Like say... the sun? I don't see the big deal here. I can get behind the soy hate cuz of the estrogen in it, but there are so many natural carcinogens we think are healthy out there that carageenan isn't a concern to me. Also, studies show no ill effects to rats. So it's probably a load of crap anyways.

  • Like, here's my point. Everyone's getting all up in arms about almond milk containing carageenan. Look at all the organic foods that contain it. Which I know most people use.

This. Anyway, DD drinks only water, and I have never considered it boring. She loves water. I do (gasp) give her city water, so bear in mind
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • Newbie here. Just wanted to say I give my 17m old goats milk. He loves it! The protein is more similar to human milk protein and it is less processed than wcm

  • For almond milk, you can make your own with organic almonds.  You can also make your own coconut milk, flax seed milk etc...you just need a blender, and a nut milk bag.

It's hard to find any milk substitutes without additives.

Your LO can also get nutrients from food and you can give water to drink

I make almond milk, no nut milk bag needed. Just a sieve.

  • You can make homemade oat milk too. It's cheap, has more calcium than cow's milk, fiber, and lot in sugar. It has a decent amount of protein too. I plan on using this in combination with soy milk (which by the way, the plant estrogens in soy milk are processed differently by the body and do not cause an increase in estrogen in the blood).
