Talk to me about your cramps

So I've had pretty bad constipation and resulting cramps from the beginning of my pregnancy. I'm managing things with colace, lots of water and low iron vitamins. But I still get pretty bad cramps in my lower left abdomen about once a week. I figure at 24 weeks this could also be some stretching pains, because I am a pretty small build.

It does worry me a bit because a) if it's stretching why only on one side? And b) the severity of these cramps. I mean, I don't want to be dramatic but these cramping episodes I have are killer. I try to tell myself it's part of pregnancy, but the worrying side of my brain always takes over to convince me that THIS much pain is not normal. My OB doesn't seem concerned, but I am also still only doing once a month visits so maybe the severity of them doesn't come across.

How bad are/were your cramps? We're you every concerned about the severity?

Re: Talk to me about your cramps

  • I have had pretty bad menstrual-like cramps for the past few weeks. I have tried drinking more water and taking it easy, but they did worry me. I never had them with my first pregnancy until the very end when I found out they were contractions.

I just asked my doctor about mine last week.. she wasn't really concerned. She seemed to think they were more like RLP and not contractions. Mine have actually slowed way down over the past week, so maybe she was right.

I think if you are still worried, I would give your doctor a call.

  • I get cramps every now and then with this baby. But I went into preterm labor with my first and when it's real you know. However. I am one of those people who go to the doctor for everything just to be sure. Just call in. I have this (probably irrational) fear that my placenta is gonna rip from my uterine wall. Cause I stretch and it feel like I'm being torn on the inside. But the doctors always tell me I'm fine.
If you knew better, you'd do better.
  • I've had some period like cramps lately, again. It lingers towards my back too. Drinking water can help!

    It's a BOY

  • Have you been checked for a bacterial infection? The two main times I've had cramps, I had a bacterial infection. They can cause cramps. Hope it gets better for you!
  • I have not had your constipation issues but have had the cramps. Typically this tells me to sit down, put my feet up , and drink another glass of water. This helps a lot. My doctor said as long as they weren't severe, or water breaking I'm good. These could be Braxton from what I understand.

  • Thursday I was having terrible menstrual like cramps and called my OB who had me come in to visit the on call doc. She sent me to L&D for an us of my cervix and some shots to relax my muscles. Well the shots didnt work so I was admitted overnight for monitoring. I am also one to not fret about things and don't think it was a big deal. I figured OB would check my cervix and I'd be good to go. L&D really made a much bigger deal about it and kept telling me I don't want to be cramping this early bc we don't know where it will lead. I was instructed to drink tons of water and just take it easy. Common causes are dehydration and UTI infections. I didn't have a UTI but they put me on a round of antibiotics just in case. I say err on the side of caution since apparently it's a bigger deal than I would have anticipated.
  • Thanks for all the feedback ladies! It's nice to hear I'm not the only one dealing with this. Sometime the cramps are so bad I worry about it being an infection or something, but the last time I had cramps I was at my OB's a few days later and they test my urine every time I'm there. I guess if she isn't worried I don't really need to be.

    Thanks again!

I would still get tested for an infection. It's not tested with urine, it's a swab test. If left untreated, it can cause premature labor. Worth getting checked out! Best of luck!
  • Do you have a cyst or anything like that?

I have a huge cyst on my left ovary that gets irritated when I do high-impact exercise. The pain starts out in that very specific area but then radiates outward and lower like a freaky combination of period and intestinal cramps.

I don't think I do. I had the "typical" one that you have when you are first pregnant, but it was gone by my A/S at 19 weeks. And I had another ultrasound at 23 weeks and nothing like that was mentioned.
