Prevacid cost $218!

Our lovely health insurance company sent us a letter last week letting us know that they will no longer cover our prescription for Prevacid starting in January which our DD takes for her reflux.  I went to Walgreens last night to get a refill and asked how much it will cost once insurance doesn't cover it anymore and they told me $218 - yikes!  I think her reflux has greatly diminished since starting solids, so I'm really hoping we can successfully wean her off the medication this month.

  • ugh ... can you get a generic version? do they cover another brand? try walmart - they have lower cost drugs. that stinks!

  • That sucks!  My DD is on Prevacid and it is in the non-preferred category for my insurance so our copay is $50 which I thought sucked.  Hopefully you can get away with not needing it or maybe try switching to Zantac which has a generic available.

  • That sucks. But, if you do need for her to continue taking it, usually all it takes is your doctor to write a letter to the insurance company telling them that it's absolutely necessary for her to take it. Many people won't fight the insurance companies, but those who do often get through and get results. DD was prescribed a nebulizer and albuterol for breathing treatments at home as necessary, and I got a bill from my insurance telling me that they wouldnt' cover the machine (around $500). I b!tched and had my doctor write a short letter to the company, and I ended up not having to pay for the entire thing out of pocket. Good luck.
  • Wow, that's awful. My girls BOTH take Prevacid! My poor insurance company.
  • Will your dr. give you the little packets? My dad takes it and his dr. gave him 60 days worth ofthe free packets... My grandma's eye dr. also gave her free samples of her eye drops every time she went to see him because her insurance won't cover it and she has glaucoma... won't hurt to ask

  • Yah, w're in the same boat. REALLY sucks. I am going to try and wean her and see what happens...
  • My friend just found this out also.  I would have freaked out.  I am glad DS outgrew his reflux about a month ago.

  • Both you and your doctor need to write your insurance. Also, ask your doctor for plenty of samples. Hopefully you can wean DD. We were giving Prevacid to DD before each bottle and now we only have to give it to her as need which is about once every couple of weeks good luck!
  • Thanks for the advice.  I'm going to call her doctor after Christmas to see what our options are in case she still has issues needing to take something for the reflux.

I agree - the more letters, the more likely it will be covered.

BTW: Love the monkey PJs. We got 2 pairs for DD - 12 mo and 18 mo - because we loved them so much. :)

  • That really sucks :( My DD was on Prevacid for several months and it was a huge help to her. I'm assuming you're already taking advantage of the Beyond the Burn program? If not, be sure to sign up; it will give you $25 off your script each month.

It does take about a month to get the card, but it was a big help for us. I guess it's not a lot compared to $218, but every little bit helps, right?

  • Its outrageous!  I was on it while PG and the insurance wouldn't cover it.  It was really frustrating.
  • Our insurance has never covered it. Totally sucks. But it was $163 for a 30 day supply at CVS. I think you can also get a coupon on the prevacid web site. We are weaning DD off it now and I am SOOOOOOOOO happy!

  • I hope I don't get this letter!!!  Prevacid is the ONLY thing that has helped her, we tried Zantac and Axid first.

Definitely file an appeal with the insurance.
