High-Risk Pregnancy

Heparin question

Hi,
I am going to be 36 weeks soon, and I have been treating Factor V Leiden heterozygosity with Lovenox.  At 36 weeks, I will be switching to heparin, due to the shorter half-life, so that it is out of my system faster once I go into labor.  When the hematologist prescribed heparin, he just have me my prescription and told me to call if I had any questions.  I forgot to ask him...but aren't you supposed to be monitored when on heparin?  I thought that someone told me that I would have to be monitored...but I really don't have much experience with this drug.  Any feedback on your experience with heparin injections would me appreciated :)

Re: Heparin question

  • Great!  Thanks for the response!

  • I am also 28 weeks and have been on heparin w/both pregnacies. Ive never experienced extra monitoring.  I love heparin more than lovenox and actually requested that I stay on heparin instead of switching to lovenox when I was early on in my pregnancy.

I am so curious- why do you prefer heparin over lovenox?  I figured, the only real difference I would see is the frequencies in having to inject.  Does it burn less?

  • I've had two pregnancies using Lovenox and switched to Heparin at 37 weeks. No extra monitoring. They did do weekly BPPs, but they do those while I'm on the Lovenox too.

  • Heparin leaves your system faster than lovenox. Also, I use the teeny tiny diabetic needles to inject the med. When doing that, I avoid the bruising and knots that I got with the lovenox. I hated the burn I got with the lovenox as well.
  • There is no need to do monitoring for low-dose subcutaneous heparin, as would be used in your case.

    Good luck to you!

  • I was on generic Lovenox for my previous pregnancies and am also on it now.  Also I switched to heparin at 37 weeks for the short half life.  I don't remember any extra monitoring but honestly I preferred the enoxoparin to the heparin because I hated doing three shots compared to two.

  • I have been on Heparin this entire pregnancy with no extra monitoring. Unless you are on a high dose they generally do not do extra monitoring.
