Help Please- Smoke Inhalation?

So I'm still not sure what exactly happened or how, but I woke up to a small fire in the living room. I fell asleep on the couch and luckily my dogs woke me up before it spread. The whole house was completely full of smoke, enough to make the smoke detectors on the oppisite side of the house go off.
I was able to get the dogs out and use their water dish to put out the worst of the fire. I opened all the doors to try to air the house out but I stayed inside to make sure all the coals were out. I of course went outside after for a while to get fresh air, but it's so dang cold out!

Anyways long story short now I have a terrible headache and am extremely light headed. I also can't stop throwing up. My husband is at work and I can't get ahold of him let alone him come home. I'm not sure if this is something I should go to the ER for or not. I'm breathing okay right now so I see no need to call an ambulance, but I'm not entirely sure I could make the 30some mile drive to the hospital. I would greatly appreciate any ideas or suggestions. Thank you!

Sorry for the length and to start a new post, but I really don't know what else to do. We just moved here so I don't know any one and our nearest neighbor is a few miles away...

Re: Help Please- Smoke Inhalation?

  • If the symptoms persist you should definitely go to the er just to be on the safe side..........
  • Loading the player...
  • Our insurance does have a number and I called them and they just said go to the ER or call an ambulance, but I don't feel like it's that serious to require an ambulance. And that also seem to be their default answer for everything so I don't want to over react.

And as for my hubby sadly not :( He works in a secure building meaning no phones or personal computers. So unless he leaves the building there is no way to contact him..

    Thank you!
  • Oh boy, labor is a whole other story!! He's deploying next week so he won't even be here. And my Dr. is 100 some miles away in Lubbock (the joys of living in the sticks...) so I'm trying to get my mom or BFF to fly out here around that time.

But nope, the only way to talk to him is if he checks his phone... Which he doesn't really do when he works nights because I'm normally asleep.

You're right, I'm thinking I'll try to wait it out a little longer and if I don't stop throwing up at least I'll make the drive in...
  • Did you call the fire dept to make sure the fire was out? EMS would have come and checked you out and would have determined what you should do. I, for one being a nurse, would go to ED to make sure your gas levels in your blood are ok. This is vital to the baby. You may think this is silly but you could have also have damaged your airway, compromising gas exchange. Hope everything is ok.

  • I'd go to the ER- better safe than sorry. Call an ambulance, that's what they're there for!!!
  • Glad you're ok! I'd listen to the nurse and go up to the ER just to be safe.
  • Oh so sorry glad you are ok. My hubby had our wood stove going last week and left to logs on top of the stove. All of a sudden my eyes were burning. I looked up the entire house had smoke in it. It took the wood off but it took forever for the smoke in the house to go away.

I ended up going into the bedroom was still bad but not as bad. Now everything smells like smoke.

Our smoke alarm didn't go off because it is broke we just got another one but have not installed it yet. No fire just so much smoke.

This was not as bad as you but wanted to share my story. I never got sick. If you still have symptoms go get checked out. You want to make sure your lungs are ok and to be on the safe side for baby.

There should be some emergency number that you have for your husband. That is not good you can't contact him at all. So sorry.

  • Glad you're ok, and I hope you ended up getting checked out last night.

Let's all take a moment today to test our smoke/CO detectors and put in some fresh batteries. @dragonfly711 get that bad boy installed STAT!

Fires scare the bejeezus out of me! I always worry about having enough time to round up my cats.

  • You should really talk to medical professionals about serious health concerns. Also OPSEC isn't just a suggestion, it's there for a reason. And I have never heard of zero way to reach your spouse. At the very extreme even the red cross can put you in touch. Anyhow, hope all turned out positive.

  • Please, find a way to the hospital. Vomiting and headache can be signs of carbon monoxide poisoning.
It still may not be safe for you in your house. The fire dept can come check for carbon monoxide.
Like mentioned above, you should get your blood gases and airway checked to be on the safe side.

This. At the VERY least I would have gotten out of the house rather than breathe that in all night. I really hope everything's okay.

  • Operational Security, a military thing. It's "don't post shit on the internet about deployment dates, missions, ect" because It can compromise security for those involved. You never know what trolls are actually reading

  • If you call an ambulance they may be able to treat you on the spot and not transport you but if they do ur insurance should cover it. Better to be safe!

    What I want to know

  • Hey ladies! I'm still alive and doing well! :) I decided not to go to the ER last night because I stopped vomiting not to long after posting. I was able to get an appointment at the weekend clinic and they said I just have a little irritation in my nasal passages and throat, other than that me and little man are as healthy as an be, thank goodness.

I am a nurse on surgical, but I have no experience really in this. I figured since I never passed out and was in clean air and improving I'd be okay. As a stubborn redhead I was hoping for a second opinion.
  • And I completely agree with bebemac!! Take just a few mins to check your smoke detectors and make sure they are functioning! We had two that were much closer and didn't work! Thank God for my dogs or who knows how this could have played out. It's totally worth it, who knows when you may need it...
  • Oh good gracious, he was TDY for pre deployment training, came home for a week, and will be leaving in the next few days. Really, it's all the same. Just the first step to leaving. He is due to come home the day before I'm due, so will he be here? Maybe, maybe not. Will he actually come home when expected? Maybe, maybe not. So the way I see it, I'm planning on him not being here but hoping he will be.
  • Don't worry Kelsey, you may or may not have been on this board awhile back when we had a crazy named "thatkelzgirl", but she disappeared and due to your name ppl are trying to figure out if you're that girl under a new name. That's why all the hole-poking. I don't think you are though. But I do hope she reappears one day.

  • Thanks @ElTrain5! I've seen her mentioned before but I don't know all the details. But I'm not her, I promise! Me too, I feel like I missed something!
  • In my area, you can call the ambulance and they can check you out. If they feel you need to go to the doctor, they will tell you, but you don't have to ride with them if you're worried about money. Their evaluations are free. Better safe than sorry. :)

Personally, if I was breathing fine, I wouldn't worry. But, I'd call my doctor's office or the hospital just to see what they think, to be sure.

Edit: After reading the other comments... I might change my answer. I might take it more seriously, but I'd still prefer to hear it from my doctors office or my local hospital than from a nurse that may be influenced by the fact that she is hired by an insurance company that may make this their go-to.
