Frustration trying to de-swaddle

Our LO is 19 weeks and has been rolling tummy-to-back a lot recently, so we have been told that we should get away from swaddling him at night in case he rolls and can't get back.  He usually sleeps wrapped in a Halo Swaddle Sack and sleeps pretty well in it at night.
We started with his left arm only out of the swaddle, and he sleeps pretty well early in the night that way, but after his first night feeding his arm flails around the rest of the night and his sleep is very erratic and he wakes himself up all the time.

Even though he is rolling a bit, do you think this is a sign he's not ready to be unswaddled, or is this just a slow painful part of the process that he will eventually figure out?  I want him to get god sleep at night, and it seems like having an arm out is really inhibiting his ability to stay asleep.

Re: Frustration trying to de-swaddle

  • He hasn't tried to do any rolling at night but I'm sure it's not far off.  Thanks for the recommendation on that sleep suit I will definitely check it out!

  • Aug13 highly recommends the sleepsuit. We just started using ours today and dd slept for 2 hours in her crib. Longest nap she's ever had in her crib.

  • I also recommend the sleepsuit. Even though my LO doesn't STTN she definitely sleeps more soundly and takes great naps too!

  • We're not going to do the sleep suit because that will be one more thing she'll have to transition out of. Once we stop swaddling, we're just going to do it cold turkey over the weekend. That way we can sleep during the day if she's keeping us up all night unswaddled.

  • I tried to go not swaddled cold turkey, but my LO rubs his face and wakes himself up or scratches himself. He woke up 4 times in 2 hours. So we went back to using the magic sleep suit. I know we will have to transition him out of it once he starts rolling over in his sleep, but he isn't even rolling over awake yet so I think it will still be awhile.

  • We are on day four with the sleep suit and it has been wonderful. My DS was never swaddled before so the transition from the RNP to crib was our issue. He sleeps at least 7 hours now and if he does wake during that time he falls right back to sleep. Before the suit he wouldn't last 10 minutes in the crib at night.
  • Just got the sleep suit in the mail - I'm gonna wash it and give it a try soon!

  • We used the sleep suit to transition and have had great results. I don't worry about it being "one more thing to transition LO out of" because by the time that happens, he'll be rolling around in his sleep anyway and will be able to get himself into a position he's comfortable with on his own.

  • Went from using a swaddling woombie to nothing cold turkey. Rough 5 nights (also after first rough night lo had 4 month immunization shots so part of those rough nights may have been because of shots) and then sleeping okay again.
  • We are now on week 2 of the magic sleep suit.  Our LO is back to sleeping for some long stretches at night and his naps are creeping up to 90 minutes.  I don't know how much it has to do with the suit, but he seems to sleep well in it!  I just wish it wasn't so bulky, it really makes nursing a challenge.
