Diaper-free time?

I've read on different websites about the value of letting your baby go commando to help prevent diaper rash etc, and I completely understand how letting them air out would be helpful.  However, I'm worried about DS peeing/pooping EVERYWHERE when doing this so I wondered what others' experiences are.

Is this one of those "in theory a good idea but nobody in real life does this" things, or what tricks have you done to give your baby some diaper-free time without ruining blankets and mats?  TIA!

edit: completely missing a word.

Re: Diaper-free time?

  • I usually do it for a bit just after she poops. I figure she most likely won't poop back to back. She just gets a receiving blanket wrapped around her incase she pee's. I'm not to worried about her peeing on a blanket.

  • DD's skin was really sensitive to certain diapers as a newborn so I would let her go diaper-free for a while every day to help with rashes. I usually did right after a bath or right after a dirty diaper. I would lay an extra waterproof mattress protector on the bed and a blanket on top of that. A lot of the time, before she was mobile, I would have a clean diaper underneath her, but unfastened so I could try to catch it if she started peeing/pooping. I realize that's probably much harder with a boy.. I put her on a hand-me-down blanket that I didn't care about in case it got ruined, but it's still in great shape.

  • I use cloth diapers (the traditional pre-fold ones) as burp cloths. They are in 3 sections and the middle one is the thickest. When I am giving DDs bottom some time to air out I put one of these under her. They are SUPER absorbent and I don't feel like I am ruining anything because they are actually meant to be diapers anyway.

I remember just laying like 2-4 clean towels on the floor and letting dd be on the floor. She was a bit older for her first rash so at least rolling over - but it's the same. Just put done something easily washed

  • I've done it with my toddler but only when he has a rash that needs to be aired out. I don't think it's necessary with a newborn as long as your doing frequent changes.

  • I had to do this with baby girl because a few days after coming home she developed a really bad rash. What I did was use an old towel and then a large pad (resembles those puppy training pads people lay on the floor when potty training pets) that I stole from the hospital. I laid the towel in her bouncer then put down the pee pad and laid her down on top of it. Then to prevent projectile pee, I just draped the pee pad over the front of her.

  • I have a waterproof pad that is fleece on one side that I've used before. It washes easily so it's perfect for naked tummy time.

  • DS2 gets air time at each change for 5-10min.  I cloth diaper so I just cover him loosely with a pre-fold after he is cleaned up.  His change pads are large with cotton quilted tops and water proofing on the back so they contain any messes.
He had a bad rash when he started to poop a lot around 4 days and the air time helped a lot.  I could see the difference within a few changes.
