Choking on everything!

Em has been eating purées since 6 months and has always done really well. He enjoys eating and will eat pretty much anything I serve him.

Well, the other day I have him some puffs and he started to gag and choke on one so I haven't given them again. Then, last night we were having refried beans so I decided to feed him some. He proceeded to start gagging and choking again. His face turned bright red because he couldn't breathe. Then tonight, he was eating his normal sweet potato purée and started to choke. He did it 3 times! It's super scary every time.

Anyways, does anyone have any idea why he might be doing this?

Re: Choking on everything!

  • Is there a chance he's teething?  When DD is teething, her saliva production shoots up and she chokes without eating anything at all.

  • I have no idea if he's teething. I've been saying that he's been teething since 3 months old and we still don't have a tooth! ;-)

Hopefully he'll catch on soon like your LO @mishy2006! I dont want to breastfeed him forever :-)

  • J does this too for anything non-purees. I offer every 3 days or so of 'real' food, cracker, puff, banana. I figure he will 'get' it soon enough.

  • G does this, too!  He did OK with a couple of Puffs today when I gave them to him in the very front of his mouth.  I think it's one of those practice makes perfect things.  It's terrifying, though.  I can only handle a few puffs every day, ha!  Don't worry, he won't be BFing forever :)
  • LO did this yesterday and today while he was eating oatmeal cereal. I never thought about choking on the increase of saliva. And he is getting his top two teeth so maybe...
