Nauseous lying on left side

So, as a STM this is totally new to me...I am fully aware of the benefits of lying on your left side and try to do so when possible. However...lately when I wake up on my left side I am horribly nauseous to the point where I think about running to the bathroom. Rolling over offers immediate (but not total) relief. In addition, if I consciously roll over to my left side when I'm feeling slightly nauseous, it very quickly escalates. I never had this with my first. I assume it has to do with pressure on my stomach and how baby lays when I'm on left side -- especially because I can't eat much these days without feeling sick/super full afterwards. I was under the impression that with your second you usually carried lower anyway (I.e. Baby doesn't drop like it does with first...just starts out that way). Anyone else experience this? Tips besides eating smaller meals etc? Obviously I avoid laying on left side but wondered if this was common. Thanks, ladies!!

Re: Nauseous lying on left side

  • I have no information about this, but I am having the same issue recently. It feels like my stomach creeps into my throat when I sleep on my left. Baby goes nuts when I lay on my right. Hang in there! :)

  • Interesting...l get very nauseous on my back. Having to stay still for my growth u/s was hell. Do whatever is most comfortable for you
  • Same thing happens to me. I also don't remember this happening with my first DD. I brought it up to my OB and he said I was fine laying on my right side if that was more comfortable, but to try the left side first.

  • Right side will help with gastric emptying and help relieve some of the reflux/nausea/etc. Laying on the left may have both the baby causing pressure on the stomach as well as not using gravity to your advantage.

There isn't anything wrong with laying on your right side, as long as you are comfortable.

  • Due to an old injury, I almost always sleep on my right side. I try to sleep on my left sometimes.

  • My doctor said your body will guide you so if you can't lay on your left, find what works for you. I can't lay on my left side either. I wake up in so much pain. I have to sleep on my back and I just prop a pillow under my right side so I'm tilted a bit.
