Spit up Vs. Throw up

How do I know which it was? I know that sounds pretty stupid. My little guy was screaming and screaming last night around 10:00 and then EVERYTHING came up and to me it sounded like throw up the way it came out. He was choking over if because it just kept coming and it came out his nose too. He's been super fussy the whole rest of the night. I feel so bad for him :(

Re: Spit up Vs. Throw up

  • Spit up is just a little bit throw up is everything. Spit up is usually just LO didn't burp properly. Throw up could be a number or things, if you're bf'ing then it could be from something you ate.

  • If they retch and gag/choke and/or empty stomach contents, it's vomit. The normal milk or saliva being spit out (sometimes projectile - those are the hard ones to distinguish) is spit up. Normal spit up can look like clear liquid, normal milk or curdled milk (partially digested milk).

    Hope your LO feels better!
  • My pedi told me throw up is typically forceful and projectile

  • :( sounds like I was right then. Thank you ladies.

  • My doc says throw up is more than 2 mouthfuls of food. Yuck. Spitup is everything else.
  • It sounds like throw up. But don't stress. My lo does this occasionally and there is nothing wrong with him. He's bottle fed and sometimes over eats. And those are the times he will projectile vomit. I just wait an hour and try to feed him again. Also if he's straining to poop and just ate, sometimes the pressure of pooping will cause him to vomit too.

I think I fed him too much :( I've been having DH give him a bottle of my BM at night. He nursed a little but from me then like an hour later acted hungry so he drank the whole 5 oz from the bottle. It's hard for me to tell when he's really still hungry.

  • Bottle feeding has been tricky in that way for me. Sometimes he acts hungry and eats a ton and is fine. But other times I KNOW he should be hungry and keep offering the bottle and those are the times he throws up. Take it incrementally. Start with 2-3 oz. if he downs those and still is searching for food, add another ounce. Or wait a bit and see if he is still searching. Especially if you just nursed. He could have gotten a lot of bm fast and then not needed but an ounce of bottled milk. Tbh, it's all trial and error. Just don't feel mom guilt about it. It was a natural reaction. My DS, it doesn't phase him when it happens. Just bleh and moves on.
A paci is a good test. If he settles right down and falls asleep, then he wasn't hungry for more, he just wanted to suck. If he is flailing his head around and going at the paci like crazy, he's probably still hungry.

Thank you for your help :)
