Pregnant after 35

Intro/new here and hoping for advice/comfort from other hypothyroid mommies...also ? Re dollar pg te

Hello everyone, My name is Brenda and I am 37 with 3 kids. I have hypothyroidism and I'm on lego thyroxine. I think I am 8 dpo and had a hunch that I might be pregnant so I just took a Dollar Tree pregnancy test and there was a light second line after the min. 2 minutes and before the 10 min max (I'll try to upload a pic of the test) To the hypo moms I read that we should make an appt. with the OB right away when pg (before standard first appt.) because there could be complications with the pregnancy. Is this true in your experience? Also, I researched the dollar tree tests online and they seem to be pretty reliable..has anyone heard different? I just don't want to get too excited and find out that it was a false positive. Thanks in advance for any advice. I'm so nervous but excited! Brenda

  • Hello.  I don't have any experience with hypothyroidism, so I can't help there.  But I did want to say that I too see the line.  Good luck!

  • Thanks :) I made my first appt. I'll be seeing the OB in mid February. They actually do an ultrasound on the first visit. Thats different from when I had my last child 7 years ago but I'm psyched. Looking forward to joining the community here :)

  • I'm on armour thyroid so I called my endocrinologist when I got BFP. My levels were good a month ago, but he wants me to have bw at the end of the month & see him first week in feb. I'm sure 'll be monitored more often then my typical 6 month bw & visit.

  • YES - get your thyroid tested sooner than your first appointment.  As my endo says, your first call is to your OB, your second is to your endo.  Thyroid levels can go crazy during pregnancy, and especially during the first trimester.  So, they'll probably test you every 4-6 weeks until you level out.  Then, they'll bump you to every 6-8 weeks.  That's what they did with me.

    Congrats!

  • I see the line- congrats!  no experience with thyroid issues... suggest you call your endo like op said.. Best wishes for a healthy and happy pregnancy and baby!
  • I have sub-acute hypothyroid, also take Levothyroxine and got my first positive test this pregnancy with pee sticks from Family Dollar.  I couldn't believe I was pregnant and so I bought six more tests at the drug store, but they were all positive too, lol.

I maintained steady  thyroid levels throughout both these pregnancies, and have my blood checked every month.  It can present some higher risk issues but if you monitor and keep tabs on it, shouldn't be a problem.  Where I live, simply being over age 35 is considered enough of a 'risk factor' that we are automatically referred to the perinatologists who will follow you along side your OB through most of the pregnancy.  It means lots of ultrasounds and chances to see baby, along with testing and checks on any other risk factors you may have present.

    Welcome, and congrats!
  • Thanks so much everyone :) I took another dollar tree test this morning and there was a second line but it was just as light as the one I took three days ago. :( was hoping to see a darker line figuring that the HCGs double every day.... Anyway, thanks again! Just can't wait to have my first appointments

  • I have hypothyroidism and can tell you from experience get it checked out sooner rather than later. I only recently discovered I was due to the RE telling me.  Started out with 25mcg Synthroid, got pregnant my first try with twins, now I am up to 50mcg Synthroid at 23 weeks and have to get it checked every month as your thyroid plays a very important role in healthy development of your baby.
  • I also have hypothyroidism, and I had read about more than likely needing to up my dosage of levothyroxine, so I called my doc immediately, but they said to just wait until my OB does my bw in about a week (it was 2 weeks away when I called them). I was hoping they would get me in asap for bw, but they acted like 2 weeks wouldn't be too far away. Does that seem accurate? They said they would send my OB all my past bw info, and they said they expected I would have to up my dosage by 50%. I currently take 75mcg.
  • Hi kami6887..I have upped my dosage by 50 % thus far and I wouldn't worry about the 2 week wait.  Even if your numbers go up, they most likely won't sky rocket and cause harm to the baby.  They just like to see your numbers below 2.5.  Mine went from 1.7 on 25mcg, then had blood work done and found they were 3.8 so they upped my dose.  I have it checked monthly and so far everything has been great.
