How much is too much?

My little one is eating tons of baby food in a day. She eats about 1/3 cup pureed vegs or fruit at one feeding, and this is at least 3times a day. She also eats about 1/4 cup of grains a day. And she would definitely eat more if i let her. She's only drinking.about.10, maybe 12 oz of formula a day. I offer it to her and she just takes a drink or two and chews on the nipple. And then she fights me until i.give her solids. She was a preemie so she is underweight 12lbs, 9oz. And she has plenty of wet and poopy diapers daily. Do i let her eat more in one sitting? Or do i cut back on what I'm feeding her? Wow this turned out to be really long, oops!

  • Honestly, I can't address the solids as I'm no expert on that but seems like she should be getting more formula. Have you tried lowering her solids amounts a little and offer more bottles? Also, I would def discuss with your pedi. Also, how long has this been gong on, and is she currently teething or does she have a cold?

  • I'd ask your doctor, especially since you say she's underweight. Personally I think that she needs to drink more and not eat as much solids but I don't know anything about preemies and their dietary requirements.

  • We're in a similar boat so a couple questions and comments.  You say she's underweight but is she maintaining her growth curve?  Their curve is more important than the actual number (to a degree, obviously) because some kids are just naturally thin (both of mine are).  A 5 ounce bottle of formula has about 100 calories.  A stage 2 container of a fruit or veggie puree is about 60, a meat/grain kind closer to 90.  If they're eating a lot of solids it's not so much a concern that it'll impact their weight as much as that the formula is the most well rounded form of nutrition.  Are you mixing the cereals with formula?  That's an easy way to get in several more ounces a day and how we reach about 20 ounces a day.

He typically eats a 4-5 ounce bottle overnight, 4 ounces of puree with cereal and 2-3 ounces of formula for both breakfast and lunch, hopefully at least one 4-5 ounce bottle or two smaller bottles while at daycare and then I handle dinner based on how he ate for the day (usually a bottle and solids and I do the formula/cereal trick if he's refusing the bottle).

Some kids (like mine) would rather starve than drink more formula.  We tried not giving solids and it didn't make him any more likely to drink the formula so the doctor said to aim for 20 ounces a day and a well rounded solids diet.  It's true that WE shouldn't be reducing their formula intake but kids will self reduce at some point - ours are just doing it earlier than we'd really like.

  • Not sure about the baby food but that sounds like far too little formula to me. Our pediatrician said even when we move to three meals at nine month, LO should still be getting at least 24 ounces a day.
