Sippy Cups

My son is 7 months and I've been trying different sippy cups for the past couple weeks. He is exclusively bottle fed with a medium flow nipple. He doesn't like any of the sippy cups I've tried because it seems like he is sucking pretty hard and not getting a lot. Just yesterday I bought a sippy cup that was for 9 months and older, but instead of a spout it has a rubber mouth piece that has a slit instead of holes. So far he seems to prefer that. We have been using a baby cup for him to drink out of and he likes that too, but I know there will be times we won't always be able to use a cup and will need the convenience of a sippy cup. I have also tried the cups with a straw but all he wants to do is chew on the straw because he is teething. Just wondering if anyone else has had a problem with their LO's getting frustrated with the flow of a sippy cup and what cups work for you?

Re: Sippy Cups

  • That's still really early for a sippy. My oldest didnt get the hang of it until close to a year.

  • Avent sippy with handles is what we are using. It has a soft latex spout. I think it says 3 months as the age which I dont understand but who am I to think a 3 month old can't be on a sippy lol

  • We use this one https://m.rakuten.com/product/240656773?listingID=252230026
We introduced it at about 5.5 months just to get him used to it and by 6 months he figured out how to use it. He's 7 months now and great with it. He's also been on fast flow (level 3) nipples since 5 months and doesn't get frustrated with this cup.

  • My 7 month old really likes this "trainer" sippy that I found at Baby Depot, it's by Nuby, and it has a soft spout like what you described. it doesn't leak, and has the slitted opening you also described. He really didn't figure it out until he started a bout of hardcore teething and decided he liked to chew on the spout, (baby kind of has to bite down on the spout to make anything come out) but since he figured out what it does, he really likes it.
  • We give a sippy cup with water along with his dinner. He loves it. Doesn't get much water out-maybe 1/2 an ounce, but it thrills him to play with it. We've only tried these by Tommee Tippee, but he really likes the two handles.

  • Thank you everyone for your responses!
  • Our pedi doesn't recommend the use of a sippy cup at all, so if your LO is good with normal cups, I would continue like that. My LO hates sippy cups so we are trying to teach him how to drink from  normal cup from the beginning (wish us luck haha)
