Poor little guy turns 4 months tomorrow &still has some major reflux. He has never had medicine for it until now. We were always told to just elevate him at all times. He is elevated to eat, sleep, and be changed. Last week we brought him in because I was tired of seeing him gag all day and we got sent for an upper GI ultrasound to rule out pyloris stenosis.
So he officially has GERD and is on prilosec for a week. He sleeps in a rock n play, next to our bed at night ( he is EBF who eats 2-3 hours) but is 26 inches and 14 lbs and is outgrowing the rock n play by the day. He gags in his sleep and I have to pick him up and pat his back frequently through the night. There isn't anywhere else for him to sleep besides his crib now seeing how he is outgrowing everything we have (swing, bassinet, rock n play). What can I do for him sleep wise? We bought a mattress wedge that goes under his mattress and elevates him, like 30-45 degrees, but when we tried it he just rolled sideways after a few wiggles. And I'm still worrying about him gagging and spitting up in his sleep in the crib in his room. Any tips? Thanks ladies.
Re: Anyone still dealing with reflux?
Had the same problem with reflux and still do at 6 months. It has gotten much better with age! Our pedi had him on Zantac (started about 4 months old) and rice in the bottle to thicken but neither seemed to work. I got so upset about nothing working that I requested to be referred to a GI at the Childrens Hospital. She told us that his belly was on absolute overload. The worst thing for a bad belly is to add MORE to the equation. She told us to slowy decrease the about until weaned off meds and then slowly decrease rice. We have accomplished both. Still have it come back up but not nearly as much. One more thing.....the meds will not stop him from throwing up-it only helps with the burning that he might be having.
I didn't put them too close because I didn't want it to interfere with his shoulders. Kind of looked like an ended V. He would wiggle at night and end up laying flat after a few hours but it worked after the nighttime bottle (and being held upright for 30 minutes after a bottle). If your worried about him at night, sleep him in the packnplay in your room until you feel comfortable with his own room. I took out the wedge and the bumpers when he was able to roll over bc after that they serve no purpose. He started sleeping on his belly.
As far as sleep is concerned..... use the wedge under the mattress pad and sheet. I rolled up two thin hospital blankets and used them under the sheet as "bumpers"
I don't know if you BF or FF but we have our LO on Similac Alimentum. It is SUPER expensive but we feel like it helped. Hang in there..... I know it is hard. It will get better as he gets older.
