Resuming activity after twins

I am an irish dancer and irish dance teacher (yes, like Riverdance ;). We have an active group of adults who perform with the dance school where I work that I am part of. I quit dancing at about 15 weeks, but am still teaching at 29 weeks (although not doing much but talking/standing during class and some very low impact demonstrating.) My girls will be here in March sometime. I'm wondering how realistic it is that I would be able to resume dancing for this summer? We do most of our shows and festivals in mid-June and early-July. I am planning to take about 8 weeks off from teaching and have a sub lined up, but I'd like to be back dancing as soon as I can.  I'm hoping to breast feed so that will be something to work around, not to mention inevitable sleep deprivation. I will  also need to regain stamina and fit into my dance dress again in order to perform. I'm probably overly optimistic, but is being active  2-3 months after delivery realistic? I'm curious when you were able to resume being active after your twins were born?

Re: Resuming activity after twins

  • I was cleared to run 6wks after my c/s. I ran in a marathon relay (my leg was 8miles) when they were 4mo old. I EBF.

It's possible - just take it slow and listen to your body.

I'm 10 1/2 weeks post partum and feel wonderful! I had a vaginal delivery with no swelling or tearing so I felt like I could of run a mile 10 minutes after they were born I'm not sure how well you will feel if you need to have a section since I haven't ever had one. I'm EBF and I have been doing insanity since week 4. I notice I need to drink a crap load of water and eat over the 2,000 cal or my supply will dip. I make sure to eat lots of protine and omega 3 rich foods like flaxseed meal mixed in to basically everything ( it's tasteless) and chia seeds etc. so my milk stays fatty. When I work out it tends to be more watery so that helps. Also I'm now a 36E so it does hurt my chest if I'm not supported well. Nursing is the only thing that's really exhausting for me when they cluster feed during growth spurts. I have super easy babies and an easy going toddler so I get plenty of rest and can lay them all down for a nap when I need it/ if I need it which is rare. Just play it out see how you feel. With my singleton I was much more tired and took me longer to bounc back because he was my first. These guys from day one I have felt great and have had tons of energy :) you may too!

    Together 6 wonderful years.

  • I only have experience with my singleton so far but I would say it's very possible. I went back to playing ultimate frisbee somewhat competitively once cleared at 6 weeks pp. I was primarily BF and pumped in the car before and after games with a little cooler to keep the milk good. It might take time to build your stamina back but your timeframe sounds reasonable to me. As pp said, eating and drinking enough will be really important. Good luck!

  • I had a c/s and felt great after. I had very little pain and was off of pain meds before I left the hospital (i know not everyone has this type of experience with c/s). I just had my pp appointment yesterday and got the all clear to workout again. I guess it just depends on how your birth experience goes. I was initially BF when I can home (I only lasted 3 weeks) and I was so tired I would've never gone to the gym at that point.

  • I had Csection but was more or less fully healed and cleared for activity at 6 or 7 weeks BUT I am so exhausted and I've lost a lot of stamina and muscle that it's really set me back. I used to be a runner but I'm so tired and overwhelmed at 3 mo pp that I can't even think about running right now. I have a nanny come in to help me for a few hours on days when I'm not working and I had planned on using that time to start running again, but right now I just use it to sleep, eat, and shower which I do not get to do otherwise!

  • I am 3 weeks post c/s and feel great. I went for a 2+ mile very hilly walk with the twin stroller (my usual run training hill) a few days ago and it felt SO GOOD after being so immobile while pregnant. I am EBF/pumping and yes I feel tired while I am feeding/pumping, and also the lack of sleep isn't helping. I don't feel ready for a run just yet but could see that happening in another 3 weeks. (I ran a marathon the month before I got pregnant, and have been a long distance runner for 7+ years)

  • I would think by then you will feel fine to dance.  I had a csection and had a wonderful recovery, I felt almost normal by 2 weeks postpartum and by 4 weeks felt completely back to normal.  I went on long walks everyday with my girls a month pp until winter started.

  • After my last single, I went back to running at 2 weeks post natural delivery. While I felt fine and got bak up to running 3 - 5 miles in no time, my pelvis didn't get enough time to heal and I ended up getting injured with sever Plantars Facitis. I was able to work through it with a TON of chiropractic visits just in time to run a marathon relay (7 miles) at 4/5 months pp. I really wish I would have waited te full 6 weeks or longer to have started back physical activity, though, because my foot, knee has never been the same since. I had no idea I was doing any damage. I felt totally fine until the injury. :(
  • This post is really helpful. Thanks for all the answers.

  • Physically, I bounced back quickly it is just so hard to find the time and energy to get back to running. I was hoping to run a half marathon in March but it is not going to happen. But I am also working full time. I think you'll be back to dancing in no time barring unforeseen complications.
