C-sections

Has anyone considered vbac?

I'm okay with a c section . But I have been given the option of trying a vbac . It's a hard choice for me . How did you make your decision for those of you who could decide ? We're any of you on the fence ?

Re: Has anyone considered vbac?

  • I'm thinking of trying, but feeling on the fence.  I was a failure to descend after many hours of pushing (a 7 lb. posterior baby) so my likelihood of success with a VBAC is quite low.  My doctor has told me this.  I will have to see how things turn out at the end, whether I have medical complications etc. like I did the first time around to decide.

  • I didn't want to go through a cs again if I could help it. I had one after pushing for 4+ hrs with a posterior baby. He was unexpectedly hospitalized afterward, and the whole expierence was so so stressful.

I also wanted to leave the option of having a third open to me, bc I'm personally not comfortable w having 3 cs. I'm lucky to live in an area w providers who support VBAC, and had one w my second.

  • I am considering it but, my children will be 14 months apart so it puts me at a little higher risk for UR. Still on the fence.

  • I tried for a VBAC in May of this year. I had essentially the same problem I had with my DD as far as both of them not descending far enough. I tried pushing both times and they wouldn't budge. With my first, my OB recommended the csection and this time (my VBAC attempt) I requested it after I started having a ton of pain that my epidural wasn't touching. Turned out I had a uterine dehiscence and all the layers of my uterus has separated except for a very thin layer that was supposedly transparent and you could see DS moving his arm around though it. The OB really pushed a tubal on me which I reluctantly agreed to and now regret. I would have loved to have had a successful VBAC though. I'm totally ok with my csection this time. Recovery was a piece of cake...so much better than the first time (not that it was terrible or anything).

  • I decided on another CS. DDs birth was very scary, she didn't handle it well. Her HR kept dropping and she came out unresponsive, they were never exactly sure why it happened. We knew it probably wouldn't happen again but we didn't want to risk it. Se we did a RCS with DS.

  • Never gave it a second thought--was extremely happy with my first CS (unplanned);  at my first ob appt with second child I was very clear that it didn't even want to discuss it :-)

  • My OB really pushed for a VBAC until she got the notes from my previous c-section and saw how difficult it was.

I ended up being sent to a specialist.  I was scheduled for a c-section on Dec.24, but my DD2 had other ideas and I went into labour on my own at 36 weeks (I still had a c-section).
  • I considered it for a second, but then decided experiencing a natural birth wasn't worth the risk, especially since trying for one would likely result in an emergency c-section for me according to my doctors. DD didn't drop at all by 40 weeks, and my current doctors don't do vbacs anyway.

Your own case aside, VBAC and one RCS are equal in risk (tho the risks are different). Both are safe options.

  • I attempted a VBAC and ended up with a RCS. I wouldn't change a thing. I felt like my first CS was due to the whole cascade of interventions from being induced and the whole experience was horrible. The labor I had with my failed VBAC was completely natural with no interventions until I went to the OR. Both csection were for failure to progress despite adequate contractions. My second labor helped me heal emotionally and took away a lot of the "what ifs" from my first CS.

  • I had a hard labor with DD - not long, but rough until my emergency c/s.  I didn't have anything to compare it to until I went into labor before my scheduled RCS with DS, so all I knew was that it was hard for me.  I was a perfectly good VBAC candidate with DS, but I felt like the only reason I had for trying a VBAC was a sense of obligation, and I didn't think that would carry me through another labor.  I also thought (wrongly, as it turned out) that since DD was so late and I had GD with DS and couldn't go past 40 weeks, I'd be unlikely to go into labor spontaneously in time for a VBAC anyway.  I think I could have done it, but my c/s recoveries were both pretty easy and my second c/s, even though I ended up having it a few days early because my water broke, was so much less chaotic and stressful than my first.

Some women want to experience vaginal birth.  I don't care if I ever do.  My decision was easy once I decided to go with what I wanted and was comfortable with, not what I felt like I should do, or what anyone else would do in the same circumstances.

  • I will be having a RSC. Aside from the fact that I have no interest in a VBAC, I likely wouldn't be a candidate anyway - I had a misshapen scarred cervix and failed to dilate at all with DS. My CS was a good experience aside from two failed inductions, so this time I'll just be skipping all the drama and going straight for the OR.

  • I was pregnant with my second when the new AMA guidelines came out in favor of VBAC.  At the time, my practice and my hospital didn't allow them so RCS was the only way to go and I really didn't give VBAC much thought.  With this one, our hospital now allows them and my OB will as well but from talking to friends/nurses/doctors, they are still pretty rare to actually happen here.  Basically, I would have to be crowning or well into labor on my own for them to not push the c/s.  I'm not really interested in a VBAC.... I had pretty easy recoveries with my first 2 and I don't like the risks with VBA2C.  Also, I want to have my tubes tied this time and a VBAC would mean yet another (although minor) surgery later on.  I'm really glad that VBACs are more of an option now b/c I have a lot of friends who need that "closure" to get over a traumatic birth experience.  For me, I am perfectly content with my c/s births and have no regrets.

  • I have started to think about it. My son was an emergency c. The recovery was fine but I would really love to be mobile after 2nd baby's birth. Chasing a 2.5 yr old around the house is not going to be fun during the recovery.

  • I thought about it but my OB doesn't think I'm a good candidate and after reading about it, I must agree. It really depends on why you had a csection to begin with.
I'm very petite, my son was 7 lbs, I pushed for 2 hours and he never descended. He was in distress, I was exhausted by the time of my csection and it was a sad labor experience because I didn't have the strenght to hold him until I was in the recovery room. I don't want to risk going through the same thing all over again, plus the risk of uterine rupture scares the heck out of me.
If the reason for my csection had been a breech baby or other complications though, I think I would have tried. So it really depends

  • I had a vaginal birth with first and a section with the second.  Now with my third, I will opt for another section.  My labor was horrible with first and I liked the low stress (for me) of the section.

  • I will hoping for a vbac with this pregnancy. I believe if I can go into labor on my own (or go 40+ weeks) I will be successful in my vbac attempt. I'm excited to give it a try.
  • If I have another baby I will absolutely consider a VBAC.  I think I'm a good candidate since the only reason I had a c-section the first time is because it was twins, they were very premature, not in good positions and needed be born quickly due to complications. I'm glad they attitudes have changed about VBAC.  From what I'm heard, it's actually very safe given you are a proper candidate and the guidelines are followed. My c-section recovery wasn't bad but I'd like to experience natural birth as well.

This is me all the way. I have chosen a RCS, but am having a hard time wondering if it's the right choice because all my anti csection friends keep saying it's not what I should do. My dr didn't push one way or the other. I think I'd feel better if they said,
You don't have a choice, you have to get a csection. I feel most comfortable with a RCS.

Count me in as another one who doesn't have much interest in experiencing vaginal birth. I don't feel I'm missing out really.

Plus, I'm not a great candidate anyway due to several factors. I do NOT want another emergency section, so RCS for me.

When I found out this babe was breech it sort of sealed the deal. I really don't think he will turn on his own at this point and I don't want a version. A breech vaginal VBAC is too risky for my liking.

  • I'm not pregnant but I'm considering a vbac if we have a third child.  I was induced and dialated to an 8 when I got "stuck" and then got a fever.  Baby A was sunnyside up which is why things were stalling.  My OB said I could try for a vbac next time but he thought because their heads were small (twins born at 38 weeks) I may not be able to deliver vaginally.  I think that's bs though and given the time I could have delivered vaginally.  (My c section was done 16 hours after induction) Anyways, I would be ok with another csection if the vbac failed. My recovery was very easy.

  • I had a scheduled c/s with DS1, and just tried for a VBAC in October. Had prolonged ROM with fever, pushed for 2.5+hrs and baby was in distress. Had RCS. I don't regret trying and am so glad I did try, I also think it was healing for me to try And at the end of the day DS2 was born healthy and thats all that mattered to me. Both c/s recoveries were pretty easy for me luckily.

Exactly the same. I just want my baby here safely, that's my main concern.
  • I'll be 40 weeks on Monday and had a RCS scheduled for December 31st when I called it off just a few days before. I'm still semi struggling with my decision but as I grew closer to the RCS it just didn't feel right. Currently I'm playing it out to see what happens. If my body/this baby decides that it wishes to come naturally, fabulous. If not I'm going to know that at least I tried. Myself, I'm terrified of a vaginal birth and terrified of another c/s. There was no obvious good choice personally and no medical reason to choose either way so playing it out seemed like the best option. With #1 I was induced at a few days shy of 42 weeks then my son was sideways. I never made it past 5 cm after 18 hours of labor. Before being induced I had zero signs of labor. This time I've had contractions, lost my MP, lots of discharge, back pain, etc. So maybe it will happen?

  • I really like this thread I am in the same boat. And find all these posts so comforting to know I am not alone in my feelings and this choice. I just can't decide! It's stressing me out!

I'm aiming for a VBAC with one of the most successful vbac docs in the area. One thing's for sure, there will be no induction.  If I don't go into labor on my own then I'll do a RCS.  Inductions are for the birds.
  • I am trying for a VBA2C (I'm currently 31 weeks pregnant). Both my previous c/s were due to my body's failure to go into labor, so I know I'm not a fantastic candidate but I am going to try. Having a vaginal birth is important to me and with two kids at home, a painful recovery from a c/s and the risks of a third c/s are something I'd like to avoid if possible.
