Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding through pregnancy

I have a son who is just over a year of age and we have to decided to TTC again. I know that milk supply during pregnancy varies significantly from mom to mom, but I was wondering what is typical. For those that saw their supply tank how far into pregnancy were you before you noticed an impact? I am a little concerned because my son currently only consumes milk while nursing and he has been slow to the introduction of solids. At this point my supply is good and I am still nursing quite frequently. I don't mind weaning, but I hope for it to be a gradual process.

Re: Breastfeeding through pregnancy

  • i'll be 16 weeks pregnant tomorrow, and so far i haven't noticed much change in supply.  DS is 15 months and only nurses about 3 times in a 24 hour period, so that's something to keep in mind, but he hasn't had any complaints.  he got really grouchy during every nursing session last week, so i thought my supply was dipping, but it turned out he just had a tooth breaking through.  my midwife did say there's usually a significant drop around 5 months, so i'm curious to see what happens when we reach that point.  i will mention, however, that nursing has become increasingly uncomfortable for me as the pregnancy has progressed.  my nipples are now very, very sensitive and i usually can't WAIT for him to be done, but i don't have the heart to rush him because he loves him some boobies!

  • I would love to get down to nursing 2 to 3 times per day. Hoping he gets there soon. Good to know that 5 months is typically when people see a lower supply.

  • I got pregnant when my daughter was 9 1/2 months old and EBF (with some solids at that point.) I really didn't notice any sort of dip in supply, at least not until I was about 8 months along and at that point my daughter was only nursing twice a day.  For most of the pregnancy, DD nursed anywhere from 4-6 times a day and always seemed satisfied with my milk.

  • I'm jealous of the moms that said supply didn't decrease. Mine is pretty much gone and I am so sad! I am 10 weeks and my DS is 13 months.
  • my son is almost 22 months old and i've noticed a gradual decrease in my supply (he is eating more solids and nurses twice a day now). I'm 4 weeks pregnant and planning to wean him when he turns 2 at the end of March so hopefully my supply will remain ok until then!

  • I'm 12 weeks pregnant and have almost nothing left. I always dealt with an oversupply. Also the pain set in early and hasn't subsided. I would make sure you come to terms with the possibly of weaning sooner than later before TTC, but hopefully you will be able to continue as long as you'd like! GL!

  • Got pregnant with #2 when DD was 18 months, she was only nursing twice a day at that point.  I started to notice at dip at 6w pregnant and was down to almost nothing at 10w when we weaned.  BFing was also uncomfortable for me while pregnant, my nipples were sore and there were times I just didn't want be touched (like if I felt queasy or something).
