Sports and Activities

What sports or actvities are you looking forward to introducing your LO's too? Are there any sports or actvities you will try to steer them away from (for example you don't really want your son doing ballet or your LO getting into more "dangerous" physical sports like rugby or football)? I know they will all eventually have their own interests but what are you hoping they'll pick up and get into?

  • I really would love if my girls played tennis, since I was pretty good and actually coached for a summer job in college.

There's nothing that I can think of that I'd prefer they stay away from!

  • I'm really hoping both of my kids swim. I grew up swimming every summer and in high school and loved it. Plus it is one of those skills that could save their life and they can do it at practically any age.

I would love if my DD got into singing or playing an instrument. I always wish I would've learned to do something musically.

I know my DH hopes at least one of our kids shares his love of cooking and movies.

And while I wouldn't say no if they wanted to play, I probably won't be gung ho for introducing hockey, rugby or football to either of my kids...

  • We will encourage him to try a little bit of everything (music, sports), and I just pray that he isn't interested in football.  SO scary with all the new findings about concussions.  My dad wrecked his knee playing football and literally didnt' bend it for 35 years until he had a total knee replacement, so my family has bias...

I'm hoping he falls in love with: golf, soccer, track, swimming, baseball, basketball, or basically anything other than football and hockey... hockey is huge here, so I'm not holding my breath, and I'd prefer that over football (I grew up as a figure skater, so I'm at least used to life at the rink!)... and of course, I hope he's interested in music because that's my passion / skill...

I absolutely don't want Brayden to play football.  I would love if he played water polo or basketball. I danced for 18 years, ballet & jazz, but it was mentally draining so I wouldn't want him to dance either.

  • B started swim lessons a few weeks ago... and she'll be starting gymnastics around 16-18mos. I am going to encourage her to do cheerleading too. It shouldn't be too hard though as she's been exposed to it since birth because I'm a cheer coach. I'd also likeher to eexplore her musical side with choir or band.

Whatever she decides to do, we'll support her!

I pray that Rhys will be at least somewhat athletic because my H is athletic and I am a 100% klutz.I know my husband dreams of daddy-son sports playing and going to watch his son's games and stuff, so I hope he gets that. I personally will not encourage Rhys to get into more dangerous sports, like football. I am terrified of concussions, and they are SO common. However, if he has his heart set on doing it, I will support him. I will support him no matter what his passions are, as long as they're not  immoral or illegal!

ETA: @lhyachinth888 just reminded me... I would love it if he swam. All of the kids in our neighborhood swim for our pool's swim team. It's great exercise and definitely a safer sport! Plus I think it will help him make lots of friends. We are joining the pool this summer I think, so we'll get him into the water early!

I also agree with @melandjames14 that I want him to be involved in SOMETHING, whatever that may be according to his interests. I don't want him just sitting around every day after school, watching TV.

  • Connor took a swimming class from 6-9 months, I skipped this class because the water at the YMCA is so cold, luckily the days we went it wasn't really THAT cold. It would be better suited for spring/summer/fall time. I would be behind him 100% for any sports or music or even gymnastics.

He seems like a tinkerer though, so he will probably be building cars/motors with my husband in my husband's huge garage he is planning on building.

That's SUCH a good skill to have.  My ex, who was a total disaster in every possible way but one, was a self-employed mechanic, and I learned SO much from him in the 5 years were together.  I hate his guts and hope I never see him again as long as I live, but at least I know how to self-diagnose most car problems and that I'll never get screwed by a mechanic / car dealer!

  • I have my fingers crossed that she wants to ride horses. I grew up riding and have done it professionally so I would love to be able to have that common passion with Emma. She loves going to the barn and petting the horses and I had her sit in front of me on one of the super quiet horses I ride and we went for a walk and she squealed and was so excited. Fingers crossed!

DH wants her to ride dirt bikes, which I also grew up doing and actually got him into. I wouldn't mind if she was into that as well so we could have our family hobby. (DH likes animals and enjoys horses but I think we're a long ways away from having him want to do more than pet them.)

I wouldn't steer her away from any hobbies or interests.

  • I would love Fin to take an interest in any and all sports.  DH plays on a mens league rugby team, so I think he would like it if his son wanted to play.  I would love to coach T-Ball too!  We plan to teach him to ski next winter (in a harness).  I will try to steer him away from hockey, but mostly because its sooooo expensive.
    imageimageimage
  • DH and I both played fastball and volleyball, so we hope both kids will play those. DH also plays hockey so I'm sure we'll put both kids in that too. I took gymnastics but there isn't a club around here, but there is dance, so if they want to do that, that's cool too. There is a football team here now, but wasn't when DH was growing up, so we'd let DS play football if he wants, but it conflicts with volleyball and hockey season so it will depend what he wants to do most.

We're going to introduce him to swimming early because our family has a lake property and we want to make sure he's safe in the water.

My husband would like him to play soccer and I would like him to be involved in music early on - probably piano to start.  I might also enroll him in martial arts as I studied it when I was younger.  Or gymnastics would be cool as well.

I don't think I would want my son playing football but if he decided that's really what he wanted to do I wouldn't deny him the opportunity.  I wouldn't prevent him from doing anything because I thought it was 'girly'. I think it's silly to do that.

Yep, it is a great skill set to learn. Funny enough, I grew up helping my uncle do vehicles and when my guy asked me if I knew this and that, he was surprised I already did. I have helped (like 50% helped) build 5 cars so far in my life!

Yeah, I don't know enough to help build, but I can usually take a good guess at diagnosing what is wrong.. I'm almost always right!

  • H and I are both very active and always have been so we will encourage our kids to have an active lifestyle, regardless of which hobbies or sports those may be.

DD1 just turned two and starts dance class on Monday and I'm probably WAY More excited about it than I should be. She took swim lessons over the summer so she'll continue those and we'll enroll DD2 as well. She's also starting skating next month. I imagine DD2 will start with those things just like big sister.

I don't think there's any activities we would specifically discourage for our kids. DH is a football coach so we're definitely not in the 'no football' camp.

  • @briannah1010 It's amazing how many more girls dirt bike now then when I was growing up. I actually went to a dirt bike camp and was literally the only girl there with over 100 guys. Now when we go to events there's a least a group of girls all riding together. Pretty fun to see a bunch of tough girls showing the guys how it's done. :)

  • No football or wrestling here for us, for the reasons folks mentioned above.  I'd love for him to get involved in sports, but my DH and I are not very athletic, so those genes will have to come from elsewhere.

I'm a theatre teacher, so of course I'd love if he got into that, but I don't want to push it on him.  I am pretty musical, and I've already tried to make a habit of letting him play on our piano once a week or so, because we are both hoping that he'll get into playing piano when he's a bit older.

  • I also hope my DS stays away from football. My husband played college level hockey and would love for our son to play, but we live in the south and the closest rink is about two hours away. My hubs is so bummed about that. We hope he likes soccer, baseball, or basketball. But if he's not interested we don't want to push it on him. I grew up with a sports nut dad who pushed me to practice every second of high school and I hated it.
We also hope he will be interested in music. Neither DH or I play, but we would love our kids to.

  • My boys (14&10) play basketball and tennis, 10 yr old also baseball and diving. 12 yr old DD is a competitive gymnast who plays tennis in the summer. We also have church and band and chorus. I am constantly running. I'm going to limit Phee to one sport at a time.
If somebody thinks they're a hedgehog, presumably you just give 'em a mirror and a few pictures of hedgehogs and tell them to sort it out for themselves.-Douglas Adams
  • I would support him in any sport he wants to do although personally I hope that's not golf or baseball. I would probably fall asleep.

  • G will start gymnastics at 12 months...I did it for years and it provided me with great strength, flexibility and balance.  She doesn't have to continue with it, but its one of the few organized sports for one year olds around here.  I would love to introduce her to skiing, I raced forever and even coached racers for a while, I don't think it will be an everyday thing like it was for us, but I would love to be able to take family ski vacations.  Other than that, the "ball" is in her court, I played soccer, volleyball, softball and even rugby in college (although that left me with pain and bruises I wouldn't wish on anyone!).  Swimming is also a great skill that I want her to learn at an early age, especially since we have a pool.  I would love if she was a little tomboy like her momma...but princess parties will do if it comes to that;)

  • Hubby and I were both athletic and involved in many different sports growing up. He is definitely rooting for soccer and hockey. I started swimming competitively when I was 5 all through college including lifeguarding and coaching swim team so I would love that. I danced from 3 until I graduated college but I wouldn't expect him to follow in my footsteps unless he wanted to. My family also skis so I know my dad is looking forward to getting him on a pair of skis next winter. I played lacrosse in high school but wouldn't be bothered if he didn't want to try it.

  • Will definitely introduce LO to tennis and piano. I think skiing is dangerous but would like LO to learn how to ski too. Swimming is also a must!

The only sport I'd discourage is football. DH is a huge football fan but does not want LO to play because my H got a concussion as a kid from playing football.

  • My husband was huge in to wrestling and football. Not a huge fan of wrestling due to the cutting weight super unhealthily and I've never had an interest in it. Luckily, the metabolic specialist said due to his history with carnitine deficiency, wrestling is an absolutely not (unless he never tries to cut weight which is unheard of in high school and college wrestling). As far as football is concerned, it scares the hell out of me but I want to encourage him if he wants to do it. I would love if he wanted to learn to play piano or guitar. My family loves music. Or better yet, be in a musical play (now I'm getting carried away). And if he came to us and said he wanted to do ballet I would be more than happy to find him a class. Ultimately, I want to expose to a variety of activities and let him choose his own passion.
