Musician MoMs

Any musicians out there? Specifically wind instruments. How far along were you before you just didn't have the breath support to play any more? I play flute and piccolo in a community band, and I'm trying to figure out if I'm going to be able to make our last concerts this year or if I should refuse any part that isn't doubled. I'm 14 weeks now but I'll be 32 at the very last concert of the year. Yes, I know there's a chance of bed rest, but assuming I dodge that... will I even be able to play at that point?

Re: Musician MoMs

  • I play the flute (and other instruments) and I wouldn't count on it, bed rest or not, with a concert that late. I stopped playing around 23wks, right before I will went on bed rest. Once the boys dropped I had more room to breathe, but not enough for a flute performance. Way too uncomfortable.

  • I sing and bowed out early (19w) because of bedrest. I don't remember when I felt constantly out of breath but I agree with the PP that until the babies dropped breath support was a joke, and even after that not great. I couldn't walk up a staircase without huffing and puffing. Sitting in a chair would be better than climbing stairs, and some people carry differently than others, but I would play it safe because the chances of being unable to do it are high IMO.
  • Thanks! I was sitting in rehearsal last night, already starting to feel it a bit and went uh oh. I don't think this is going to work. The other picc player isn't too happy about the prospect of picking up the 2 pieces I was playing it on, but I'll tell her it's either switch now or get the parts very close to the concerts and have to learn them fast. I think I'm the only one on a part for one of the other songs, too. There are enough people to cover, so we'll just need to rearrange next week!
  • I play flute, too :) I played a few solo pieces around Christmastime when I was 22-25 weeks that required me to stand. Stamina while standing was harder for me than breath support. My girls aren't "in my ribs" or making it hard to breathe quite yet, but going to rehearsals, practicing, etc are just too hard.  I declined a request to play for something in two weeks when I would be 31 weeks and don't really plan to play again until the fall or summer.

  • I'm still playing/ singing, but only as a support member: no solos for me. That way, if I do need to bow out, I can. But at 29w, everything I do is seated. I have a bar stool that I use so I'm not shorter than everyone else too.
  • I sing, and though I actually was able to breathe up to the end (I'm long waisted and the babies sat low, so that helped) but, like zazu, the length of time standing would get me. I was supposed to sing in a concert at 32 weeks and there was just no way (plus I was on mbr by that point).

I actually had a much harder time with breath support post-partum. I had some diastasis recti so those muscles just were not acting how I was used to. After several months of practice and core-strengthening exercises, I feel back to normal, but I was definitely surprised by that part of the recovery process.
