I judged, what say you?

So yesterday at BRU I saw a woman return her cart. Awesome right? I love when people return carts!

Well, it was, until I realized she left her baby alone in the car, to walk across the parking lot to return it, inside the store. She was parked on the other side of the lot from the store. I judged. So, am I wrong? Do you do this? Do you judge?

  • Bad idea on her part.
  • Pie! Because I'm not gonna say "eff you, Jackson," but I'm a special snowflake. ;) I pretty much only walk the cart out to the car at the grocery store. If DH isn't with us, I let one of the baggers walk us out (they always offer) and then they can take the cart back.
  • For me it also kinda depends on the age of the kid. Baby? Yes. Toddler? Maybe. Older kid? Nah. I know you said baby so I would judge in this case. Probably.

  • You know for a fact she had a baby with her? Like you saw the baby? I park next to the cart coral but when I can't I lock my babies up tight and still return it. I wouldn't go back up to the store but if it's a few cars down or across the aisle then I will. I figure if I can see the car and it's locked then there is very little risk. Like miniscule.

I don't know without seeing just how far away she really was. I return carts all the time with Muppet locked in the car (in the winter. In the summer, poor sucker has to go with me.), but I can always see my car and I would not go inside the store.

Honestly, though, I make a point of parking no more than two or three spots away from a cart corral so that I can return carts with the kiddo in the car.
This. I do this when I have DD and DS with me while I am alone. I park next the the corral when I can and when I can't I lock them in and go to the corral that I can see my car from. I run the buggy to the corral and run back. If I just have one kid then I take them with me.
  • Seems to me that even am older kid left unattended in a locked car would still be at risk. Someone could smash the windows and take the kid or steal the car with the kid inside. Shit like that happens all the time.

I have a relative who once saw an abduction take place. A man "accidentally" spilled mustard on a woman, and when she was distracted with the mess, he snatched her baby and made a quick getaway.

So, yeah, I would have judged the everloving fuck out of that dumb-dumb.

Yes, I saw the baby. We walked out at the same time. Saw her in the store. No one else with her. No one in her car. We also returned carts at the same time.

As I was walking back I saw DH realize she left the baby in the car. hahaha his face was hilarious, pretty sure his eyes were gonna fall out of his head.

  • Eh, if my car was that far away I wouldn't have gone that far myself, but if her car was locked, what was really going to happen to her baby in that amount of time!?  If this was in a high crime area where car jacking and whatnot is common, OK fine, otherwise, I would not have judged.

This is where I'm at. I don't know if I would have walked that far.

I do this all the time when I can't park near a cart corral.  I lock the car and have the keys with me. Wasn't there a thread the other day about people leaving their babies in strollers parked outside of cafes and restaurants in Scandinavian countries, and how that would never happen here?

See location so matters to me. If this were in my old city, I wouldn't have judged so much. The city I was in though? That's crazy.

Also I don't have a problem with locking them in the car and returning your cart when its close by. I guess it was more the fact it was across the parking lot and their was no direct line of sight. The there were two rows full and completely blocked off any sight of her car. Plus the location.

This. I also live in a small town that is relatively safe

  • I think my opinion is also swayed by how vocal the child is. Babies can't talk. My sister though, would scream bloody murder the entire state would hear. So the baby not being able to call out to the mom plus no direct line of sight makes me uneasy.

  • I agree with if the car is close in sight and its only for a few seconds I dont see anything wrong with that.  I have to do this often with LO and never think twice about it.  Gotta do what you gotta do.

  • This is why I love target. Cart corals everywhere!!!

    That part!

I cant stand when I go somewhere and there are no cart corals or they are super far. Grrrr

  • I've left my kids locked in the car to go in the post office to get my mail...  It's NBD to me. I guess it's along the lines of people leaving their babies outside to nap in a pram. The car's a secure place, and so long as its not a danger that they're going to overheat, it doesn't seem like something to worry about.

  • I have left my kids in my locked car, I have left the older kids with the baby in the car....but not if I'm not within eyesight. I think it depends on where you live, how far you are going from your car and how secluded your vehicle is. It's not something I do often, but yep, I do and have.....

  • I would seriously judge.  I either park my car right next to the cart return and leave the baby locked in or I walk it back and carry the baby or if neither of those options work (which is rare) I leave the cart in the parking lot.  Yeah I hate when people do it and it might make me a jerk but at least I'm a jerk with a safe kid.

My target has ZERO cart corrals. ZERO.

  • I was on the other side of this a month ago or so at the grocery store. It was a cold rainy day and I had the squirmy 3year old along. After unloading the groceries, I strapped him in the carseat, locked the doors, and literally ran the cart to the door of the store because it was closer than the nearest corral. He was in eyesight at all times. While I was doing this, a car pulled in next to mine and I saw the passenger look at my son and then comment to his girlfriend as they walked in "there's a kid in that car. Alone." "It's ok--he's mine!" I cried out as I hurried past them. My take was that his darting in front of a car in a busy parking lot or getting chilled from cold wet rain were potentially greater risks to his wellbeing than an unlikely abduction. I didn't like if but probably would do it again. I would never leave him in the car and go inside a place though.

Does it really though? I think it's pretty rare, but then again I have no stats to back that up. :o)
This. We live in one of the safest times in history, but one of the most paranoid, due to media and tv shows that dramatize crime.

Well, I have no stats to back that up, either and I'm no about to go looking, but yeah, I'll wager a bet that infant abductions happen daily. They happen in low crime, safe areas, too. And I'm sure that the people they happen to never would guess they would happen to them. Why risk it to return a shopping cart?

Your target sucks, dude. Is it in a thriving metropolis where they can't waste precious parking space on cart returns??
  • I park by cart corrals (as much as I hate to) and would not walk too far from my car, even though my area is low crime.

I would rather be that douche who leaves the cart in the parking lot (if no corrals) than let LO out of my sight unattended. I wouldn't think "worst mom of the year" but I would probably judge some. Only one LO.. Just not worth the risk.

  • I don't know about this situation I probably would have a comment. But I saw a woman driving away from BRU with her infant in front seat...not only did I jusge I tried to call the cops but couldn't get the license plate.
