TTC After a Loss

Repeat Loss testing*ticker warning DS*

Hi Girls!
I've been mostly on the TTGP and TTTC boards. I posted this last night on TTTC, and someone suggested I post here, too and might get more answers.

After my 3rd loss (in the last 8 months) my old OB told me that "early losses are normal" and to just keep trying. I quickly realized, even after being with my OB for the last 16 years, I needed to find a new doctor. I took the recommendation of a few girlfriends and made an appointment with a new doctor. He is an OB, but their office also does initial infertility testing through IUI. (They do not do IVF).
I had my appointment on Monday and I love him. He took my concerns very seriously and agreed that this was a legitimate concern. He said he did not think this was an infertility problem as I am getting pregnant, but it was a recurrent loss problem and he wants to determine why my body is not keeping a pregnancy. He suggested that I start low dose asprin that day, and ordered 7 different blood tests. He wanted me fasting for a few of them so I am going in Friday morning for the blood tests. He also mentioned doing an ultrasound and HSG. If all of those come back normal, he said he would want DH and I to see a chromosome specialist to have an analysis done.
I guess my question is, have any of you been through repeat loss testing? Is there anything that I should be looking for him to do that he has not mentioned? There are two large infertility clinics in my area that I have the option of going to, but regardless I want a new OB, so I figured I would see what he says before considering going to the infertility clinics?

Thanks for any feedback.

I've had RPL testing and a SIS. In my case, the RPL really didn't provide any answers apart from a single copy of MTHFR that is being treated preventitavely with baby aspirin, b-vitamins and extra folic acid. The RPL looks at clotting disorders, AMH and a bunch of other things as well.

My main issue was found during a SIS and MRI. My problem was structural and a sub-septum was found which is blamed for causing both my 2nd tri loss and my early loss. I had that resected about 8 weeks ago and waiting on a repeat SIS to confirm my ute is in good shape.

I actually think that it's a good thing that your doctor is exploring both RPL and HSG. That way you'll cover both those basis and hopefully get an answer.

ETA: I just saw that 2 of your 3 losses with CPs. Have you had your progesterone tested?

  • I had rpl testing done before Christmas. I was checked for clotting disorders, a few hormone levels, and chromosomal karyotyping. I also had a saline sonohystogram. My results all came back in the normal range except one hormone level which is being treated with medication. I would call your insurance company for pre approval as some of these tests are very expensive.

  • Hi Kitty - I posted a similar question and then just came across yours - our situations sound very similar so just wanted to say hi rather than just read n run..

    Wishing u all the best!!

  • I'm sorry for your losses.  I'm glad that you followed your gut and switched doctors & that he is taking you seriously.  The testing all sounds normal (I just finished up my RPL testing which resulted in low AMH, Asherman's and a hysteroscopy to remove the scar tissue).  I want to echo other's though that if you get to the point of needing any treatment that you transition to a RE!!  I love my OB practice and cannot wait to go back to them but this is what my RE does and specializes in.  Best of luck.

  • Welcome and sorry for your losses.  My first was BO and last was CP so our history is kind of similar
I had the RPL back last month as well as the HSG.  All of mine came back in the normal range and my HSG was clear.  My doctor didn't suggest the chromosomal testing so it sounds like you're already a step ahead of me. I agree with @pinkcamino though, if they aren't already you should def have him check your progesterone.  Mine were all in normal range during my pregnancies but my doctor still put me on a supplement (to start after a +HPT) to hopefully help prevent a future loss.
GOOD LUCK, I hope you get some answers.

  • Thank you for the warm welcome and all of the great advice.  I will check out the blog tonigh.  I should have mentioned, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2009, and have been on Synthroid since.  I just had my TSH checked again last month and I was at 1.3, which my family doctor and OB were good with.
I went in for my blood work today.  They took about 7 vials of blood and said it would be about a week before all of the results came back.
@PinkCamino - I think the only time I have had my progesterone tested was during Sept loss.  It was 17.2 when I was 5w 4d pregnant and then dropped to 9.5 5 days later  at 6w 2d pregnant.  I will ask him about testing this cycle.
I will take the advice and see RE for treatment.  My hope is to go back in and meet with this OB once all of the lab results come in and see what his plan is. I agree an RE is the best option for treatment.

Thank you again for taking the time to respond and I wish the best of luck to you all, too.
