Cloth Diaper Mamas

DS slept 10 hours last night (so awesome, too bad I was too stressed out about work to enjoy it) and he wet right through his diaper. He uses Honest Diapers so I don't want to go get him in Pampers or Huggies for more absorbency. Would cloth make a good night time alternative? I know there's a CD board but I thought I'd ask you ladies first:)

Re: Cloth Diaper Mamas

  • Yep! My LO STTN in cloth with no issues. We use pocket diapers so we can control the absorbency. He's fine with 3 microfiber inserts for overnight. I got some bamboo and hemp inserts yesterday though, so we are going to play around with those this weekend and find a trimmer combination.

  • LO does great in cloth overnight. Of course, we CD full time with a variety of different styles and brands. I've found that our Rump A Roos pocket with the doubler insert work best for us over night. She can/could go a full 12 hours in one of those. I usually try to change her after 8 or 10 hours, but she never leaks through!

  • I cloth and have no problems leaving him in it for long periods or with leaking. There are brands that work better than others, of course. For ON I use a fitted with fleece liner and a cover. Eventually I will use wool for ON.

If you are just starting, you really can't go wrong with bum genius pockets. Easy, good absorbancy. hemp inserts are thinner, so I use a regular one and a hemp one if I use a pocket.
  • We like our GMD workhorses for overnight. If i"m lazy, I'll put a 7th generation disposable on him and they work great too
everything else leaks like crazy for us.

  • We cd full time and just love it. We use rumparooz pockets for night and day care. I love their Dexter and Charlie prints!
  • We use bumgenius 4.0 pockets stuffed with a bamboo and a microfiber insert. If he wakes up multiple times a night we change him once but if he STTN we don't. We have not had a leak yet and he is a heavy heavy wetter.

  • Thanks for all the feedback!! I think we will try tonight, I have a couple Fuzzibunz and Bum Genious diapers that I'll prep.

@dani_brewer that's an interesting logic. I think what's more important to ask yourself is if DH/SO is on board, so that you can get into a routine with it.

  • I have a CD question, and I'm gonna thread-jack rather than make another CD thread. Do any of you EBF and ECD? I'm getting really tired of LO having blow outs, and I've already switched diaper brands. I'm starting to think disposables just aren't good enough for my little monster. But at the same time I also think CDing is a lot of work, and I already EBF which is a lot of work. So my question is: is EBF and ECD a lot to take on, or have I built it up unnecessarily in my mind?

I do. I don't think it's a lot to take on. All it is is some extra laundry, in my opinion anyways.

  • I just realized how "crunchy" I am
    Baby wear
    EBF/EP on days I work
    CD
    Make my own baby food.
Cosleep at least a few hrs at night/early morning.

CD isn't a lot of work. Honestly. The ladies on the CD board make it seem harder than it is. The just takes some "seed" money to get started and your set for a long while.
  • @dani_brewer we do both. CD isn't that big of a deal once you get a routine of it. We have only had 1 slight leak in CD and too many to count when she is in disp. Recently we had to go 100% disp due to yeast infection we are treating but I hate it. I'm counting down the days until we are back in cloth.  We have a variety of types. All in ones for daycare, pockets and best bottoms for the house.

As for night time, we use fitted and cover from Nifty Nappy. They are hemp and have great absorbency.

  • @dani_brewer I do both as well and with the pocket diapers it's as easy as disposables. I'm actually dreading solid food since EBF diapers are relatively easy to clean (water soluble poo!). @LEMSA Gotta love the crunchy life!

No way, Jose! You can totally do both. Once you get into a rhythm, you won't even think twice about it! We only cloth part time (sposies for daycare) but it's not difficult at all :)

There was a bit of a learning curve for me at first but, nothing major! You can do it...come over to the cloth side!

I do both. It's not hard, and you're probably imagining it to be a bigger issue than it needs to be. I do diaper laundry twice a week. It's just adding 2 extra loads to be laundry routine; no biggie. Putting on and taking off the diapers is not difficult. It's easy once you get your routine and comfort level with diaper changes.

  • Not to hijack the thread, totally too lazy to start a new one but.... Has anyone tried the second sale on cotton babies? They have bumgenius 4.0 for 23$ For two diapers. I guess they have slight defects or a possible mark? Brand new though. Just curious.

I do both. Have from the day we got home! Easy peasy. I would even say that EBF is more difficult than ECD.
I agree that CDing gets built up as being more difficult than it really is. They're also really nice BC I never have to worry if LOs in the right size. Lol which is nice BC I just dont get the sizing thing!

If you're still seriously considering it, go pick up a few and start pt. You'll get into the groove before you know it! You'll never look back! :)

  • For the ladies that are intimidated to start, I just decided to do overnight CDing and it was not at all intimidating. Maybe you can gradually make the switch if you feel more comfortable. DS liked sleeping in his CD last night and after a 9.5hr sleep stretch, he didn't wet through his diaper! Such a relief! When DH said it was gross to wash a pee diaper each morning in our machine, I asked him what the difference was between washing that or pee soaked Jammie's and bedding....needless to say he had no response. Good luck!

  • Ditto PPs who say to just go for it. I made the mistake of wading way too far into the CD board while I was pregnant, and I got all stressed out about it. I finally stopped reading and just went for it. We've been cloth diapering since we ran out of the pack of disposables we brought home from the hospital. I find the CD board really useful if I'm looking for something specific.

Overnight, we use a BumGenius 4.0 stuffed with the regular BumGenius microfiber insert on top of a Kissa's Cotton Fleece Super Soaker doubler. Not one leak so far with this combination (knock wood).
