Breastfeeding

Exclusively pumping

Hi ladies

I have been exclusively pumping for the last 3 weeks due to latch problems. I get really stressed out about my breast milk output. I'm currently getting about 30oz a day. My LO was getting 3oz in a bottle for 7-8feedings in a day. The doctor wants me to give 4oz now per bottle and I'm afraid I won't produce enough for him. I really don't want to supplement if I don't have to. My LO is 5 weeks old. How many oz did your baby take at 5weeks and how much breast milk is a good output? I pump every 3 or 3.5 hours round the clock. I also eat oatmeal every morning and drink plenty of water. I'm nervous to try fenugreek. I'm trying to go as natural as possible.

Thank you

Thank you

  • I get about 3 oz per session. LO is 5 weeks today and eats 3.5-4oz

  • 30 oz is great from what I understand. At 5 weeks my little girl would take between 2-3 oz and nurse often. She eats 8 times a day now and takes between 3 and 4. She's 9 weeks. BF babies take on average 25 oz a day.

  • Is there a reason that the doctor wants you to increase bottle sizes?  We bottle feed and breast feed, so I can't say exactly how much LO eats now, but at 5 weeks I'm pretty sure we were only doing 3 oz bottles.  We feed when LO is hungry and not on a schedule so if he had 3 oz and wanted more we would just give an ounce at a time more.
  • I only get about 7 feedings for him. He sleeps longer at night. 5 hour stretch and two 3 and a half hour stretches. I feed him every 3 hours. He doesn't seem to want 4oz at night. Last night he only drank 3.5oz each feeding. He is getting about 24oz total a day. Plenty of wet and poopy diapers. He put on 17oz in 12 days.
  • I don't have any true advice to add, it's been 3 years since I EPd for DD. I just wanted to encourage you. It's HARD to EP but it can be done. Trust yourself, you will know what to do.

  • I increased my DD bottles around that age (I was exclusively pumping) and she ate the same amount, she just ate less frequently. You just have to find what works, you can try it and if it doesn't work go back to what you are currently doing. For us it worked good and there were less bottles to wash. Also if you are worried about supply you could pump more frequently.

  • My baby is 14 weeks old and I pump about 40oz a day and my baby drinks all of it and I still occasionally have to supplement a bottle . When she was 5 weeks old she as eating about 25 oz per day. Supplementing with formula is not the worst thing....I call it her vitamin drink :)
  • 30 oz a day is great output especially at 5 weeks! I prob get about 30 oz now and he is 4 months and EP. I struggled a lot in the beginning and was probably only getting 2 oz a pump at that point but it eventually increased. Also. My LO was barely taking 3 oz at that point. He takes 4 oz now at 4 months old so Im wondering why your doctor wants the increase, from what I have read that is pretty normal. But we also still supplement 1 bottle a day so that I don't feel stressed and always a little ahead, it's really not so terrible.
