What formula do you use??

I am expecting twin girls this spring.  I am really hoping to BF as long as possible, but I had a terrible experience with my son, so of course I am having doubts that it is going to work out for me.  I want to have some formula on hand...what brand do you use and why???  Do you use organic formula??  Trying to do some research on the different ones....thanks!!

Re: What formula do you use??

  • We use Similac Sensitive. We were originally using Similac Advanced but it made C inconsolable and they both had pretty bad spit up issues. The boys pediatrician saw D spit up and the amount at one time and heard C crying unable to comfort him. He had us add rice to the formula but after five days of it taking an hour for D to eat 2 ounces I asked to switch to the sensitive formula. The spit up stopped and C returned to the happy baby he was when I tried breast feeding for the first two to three weeks.

  • We used Walmart brand organic formula (Parent's Choice). You can buy it online by the case (4 cans) for $61 and get free shipping.

FWIW, we used to use Kroger's generic organic formula, but they discontinued it. After doing some research I learned that almost all store-brand generic formula comes from the same company - they just put different labels on it. This site has great info: https://www.storebrandformula.com
I was relieved that we found an affordable organic formula, considering that Earth's Best is $28 per can!

  • We started with Similac Neosure because they were 7.5 weeks early. At our 6 month appointment, the doctor said they were all caught up and we could switch to something a little cheaper. We went with Similac Advanced because my son had an allergic reaction to Enfamil in the NICU, so I wanted to keep them with a form of Similac.
  • At first, we used whatever free samples showed up on our doorstep. (If you sign up, it will come -similac, enfamil, Gerber goodstart, and Walmart will all send it if they know you're expecting, although for twins I'd lie about the due date and say it's earlier just to make sure it gets there in time) and then whatever we had good coupons for (once again, sign up and it will come - Target will take one manufacturers coupon and one target coupon AND one manufacturers "check" all for the same tub of formula, so a couple times I only paid $5. That being said, the coupons get less generous as time goes on) and then we got it at Sams Club. Most babies don't need the sensitive stomach, acid reflux, etc.
  • We started with Enfamil because that's what they had in the hospital.  Then we moved to Enfamil Gentlease.  That was super expensive (Enfamil in general) so we swtiched to Sam's Club brand gentlease formula.  Had no problems switching and the girls are doing great. It's almost half the price of enfamil.  I'm not sure if they make organic though.  I didn't even think to try organic, we're happy with the regular stuff I guess....

  • With DD we used Enfamil Gentlease at the beginning for her gassiness, but switched to regular Enfamil A+ after a few months. It's what we received in the hospital and luckily she had no issues.

  • I supplement with Enfamil Gentlease because my pediatrician's office has been very generous with samples and they apparently have an awesome Enfamil rep.

  • We use Enfamil Premium to supplement BFing. I second what PP said about signing up with all the companies. We had four or five tubs plus travel sized samples and tons of checks sent to us before our boys arrived. They still send me tons of stuff so it's definitely worth it. We are also trying out Target's brand equivalent now and so far so good.

  • We were using Enfamil Gentlease. A month ago we switched to Sams Club brand (Simply Right - Gentle) as Enfamil is very expensive. LOs did great when we switched their formula.

Good to know: Store brands formulas are similar to branded formulas. They have the exact ingredients. The only difference is the price.
  • started out on Gentleease and was able to transition to Target's store brand version of it. Highly recommend the generic! Pediatrician was completely okay with it and it saved us so much money!

  • My boys take Similac Advance since they were born with no problems.

  • We started with similac soy but I transitioned them to similac advance around 4 months.
  • I use parents choice. Its cheaper and my boys do good on a 50/50 mix of their tender and advantage mixes.
